Australian Deal on Torchwood

BRIGHTON, February 28: Australia’s Network Ten has acquired
BBC Worldwide’s 13×50-minute drama Torchwood, and has committed to the second season that is currently in
production.

Torchwood is about an
international team of investigators led by Captain Jack Harkness, an American
air force renegade—played by John Barrowman—who first appeared in the
BBC’s Doctor Who in 2005. The
series, set in the U.K. in 2006, focuses on Harkness and his team as they use
scavenged alien technology to solve crimes.

Transmitting first
on BBC Three, the first episode of Torchwood was the most watched non-sport program ever
to air on a British digital channel.

Torchwood brings a
sexy new twist to the traditional cop show genre that we at TEN are thrilled to
have as part of our 2007 slate,” said Beverly McGarvey, the head of programming
at Network Ten.

The series, penned by Russell T. Davies, has now been
licensed into nine countries, including Spain, New Zealand and Sweden. Torchwood is a BBC production in association with
CBC.
