Cable Once Again Tops Golden Globes

HOLLYWOOD, January 12: HBO received a number of honors at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, while AMC’s Mad Men took home the statuette for best drama series for the second year in a row, and NBC triumphed in the comedy categories.

HBO scored wins with Anna Paquin of True Blood and Gabriel Byrne of In Treatment taking best actress and best actor in a drama series, respectively. HBO’s John Adams won in the mini-series or TV movie category, and its stars Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti were given best performance accolades. Tom Wilkinson of John Adams won for best supporting actor, and Laura Dern of HBO’s Recount took the supporting actress category.

On the comedy side, it was a clean sweep for 30 Rock. The NBC series won for best comedy, and Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin were both recognized for their comedic performances.

On the feature-film front, it was a big night for Slumdog Millionaire, which took home top honors as best dramatic picture. The film also scored wins for best original score, for composer A. R. Rahman; best screenplay, going to Simon Beaufoy; and Danny Boyle was named best director.

Kate Winslet was a double winner, taking home the award for best actress for Revolutionary Road and best supporting actress for The Reader. The male lead went to Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler and Heath Ledger received a supporting nod for The Dark Knight.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona was named best comedy or musical, and Sally Hawkins of Happy-Go-Lucky and Colin Farrell of In Bruges won for their lead performances in the category. Disney’s Wall-E beat out Kung Fu Panda and Bolt as best animated feature, and Israel’s Waltz with Bashir came out on top in the foreign film category.
