HBO Scores Big at Emmys

LOS ANGELES, September 17:
HBO came out on top at the Primetime Emmy Awards last night, walking away with
a total of 21 awards, including best drama series for The Sopranos, followed closely by NBC, which picked up 19
awards, including best comedy series for 30 Rock.

ABC and CBS tied for third
place, with both networks snagging 10 awards each. For the fifth year, CBS’s The
Amazing Race for outstanding
reality/competition program. On the heels of his Oscar for the documentary An
Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore bagged
an Emmy in the outstanding creative achievement in interactive television
category for his youth-oriented channel Current TV.

HBO’s Bury My Heart at
Wounded Knee scooped up an award
for best TV movie, while the best miniseries award went to AMC’s Broken
Trail. Comedy Central also won an
Emmy in the outstanding variety, music or comedy series category for The
Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

In the lead actor and
actress comedy categories, Ricky Gervais scored for his role as Andy Millman in
HBO’s Extras, and America
Ferrera won for her role as Betty Suarez in ABC’s Ugly Betty. ABC dominated the lead actor and actress drama
categories, with James Spader capturing an Emmy for his role in ABC’s Boston
Legal and Sally Field for her role
as Nora Walker in Brothers & Sisters. In the mini-series categories, lead actor went to Robert Duvall for
his role as Prentice “Print” Ritter in Broken Trail, while lead actress went to Helen Mirren for her
role as Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect: The Final Act from the Masterpiece Theatre strand on PBS.

In the supporting actor
and actress comedy categories, Jeremy Piven picked up an award for HBO’s Entourage, while Jaime Pressly walked away with an Emmy for
NBC’s My Name Is Earl. In the
supporting actor and actress drama categories, ABC once again came out on top,
with Katherine Heigl winning for her role as Isobel “Izzie” Stevens in Grey’s
Anatomy, and Terry O’Quinn for his
role as John Locke in Lost. In
the mini-series categories, supporting actor went to Thomas Haden Church for
his role as Tom Harte in Broken Trail, and supporting actress to Judy Davis for her role as Joan McAllister
in USA Network’s The Starter Wife.
