MIPCOM 2012 Preview: A Note from the Editors

NEW YORK: World Screen’s editors provide a snapshot of the highlights of our record-breaking, 642-page MIPCOM edition, the biggest and most ambitious endeavor in our 27-year history.

As we started pulling together this MIPCOM edition—right after we had wrapped our MIPTV issue!—we had an inkling that we were on to something special. But as we put this issue to bed this week, even we were a little taken aback by what we had achieved.

We are known for our signature special reports—a comprehensive trend feature followed by a host of Q&As focused on that particular topic. Every MIPCOM we produce one big-picture feature; this time we have two. In the first, our London-based special projects editor, Jay Stuart, takes a comprehensive look at television advertising today as it faces the threat of DVRs and online video, and Anna Carugati, World Screen’s group editorial director, talks to a range of executives to provide further insight into how they are addressing developments in the market. The group assembled includes four of the world’s top commercial broadcasters—RTL Group, ITV, TV Globo and Fuji Media—plus leading media buyer GroupM.

Anna also worked with Elizabeth Guider on our comprehensive look at comedy, which many say is experiencing a renaissance today. Studio toppers spoke to Elizabeth about the successes they’re having globally, while a slew of writers, creators and stars shared with Anna their insights into making people laugh.

As you’ll see from the rundown below, this issue delivers an unprecedented mix of senior level executives, creators, writers and stars.
