Brits Win Big at International Emmys

NEW YORK: British TV productions won five awards at last night’s International Emmys, where Lady Gaga was on hand to present Nigel Lythgoe with the Founders Award and Zee TV’s Subhash Chandra accepted the Directorate Award from presenters Richard Parsons and Archie Panjabi.

Christopher Eccleston won best actor for BBC One’s Accused and Julie Walters scored a statuette for best actress for MO from ITV Studios for Channel 4. Accused, from the U.K.’s RSJ Films, also won best drama. Best comedy went to Benidorm Bastards from Belgium’s Shelter for 2BE in association with SevenOne International.

Millennium from Sweden’s Yellow Bird took the win for best TV movie/mini-series with the adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s successful novels. The World’s Strictest Parents from the U.K.’s Twenty Twenty Television scored in the category for best non-scripted entertainment. Twenty Twenty’s Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne was named best arts program.

Chile landed a first-time win, with What Is Your Dream? (¿Con Qué Sueñas?) from Mi Chica Producciones garnering a nod in the category for children and young people. Life with Murder, a production from Canada’s JS Kastner Producions and The National Film Board of Canada in association with CTV, was named best documentary. Blood Ties (Laços de Sangue) from Portugal’s SIC with TV Globo took the win in the telenovela category.
