TOKYO: Boréales and NHK are to launch their co-production Volcano Devils (Facing the Killer Volcano) in Cannes, where the companies will also reveal behind-the-scenes stories during the "Financing for New Co-Production" panel on Sunday at the Carlton.

Volcano Devils follows Katia and Maurice Krafft, the famous French volcanologists and adventurers who died in a volcanic eruption in Japan 20 years ago. Journalists, officials, scientists, firemen, policemen and local also give their accounts. The 90-minute production was done in HD, combining exclusive archive materials, with interviews with survivors, aerial vies and CGI images. The script, shooting, direction and post-production were all handled by Boréales and NHK together. Terranoa distributes the title.

Frédéric Fougea, Boréales’ executive producer, said, “A unique adventure shared through the whole process of the film. From the conception we have been cooperating with fantastic NHK teams. Our French crew had the chance to work on the field with skilled talents and huge production means, aerials, special effects, etc. This copro was the most challenging ever. It has not always been easy to understand each other and to find solutions but ultimately we always did successfully. We gave birth to an incredible film and in the process, tied relationships that we really value.”

Junichi Katayama, NHK’s executive producer, added, "As a Japanese public broadcaster that was involved in the coverage of Mt. Unzen and had casualties among our staff, being able to release this film in the year of the 20th anniversary of the historic tragedy is very meaningful. I’m very proud of the passionate and competent team that we formed with our French partners. Continuous dialogue between the two organizations made this true co-production possible.”
