ATLANTA: Larry King’s CNN nightly show, which has been on the air for 25 years, will end its run in the fall.

King announced the move in his broadcast yesterday. He maintained that the decision was his—speculation has been rife over the last few weeks that CNN was seeking a replacement in the wake of Larry King Live‘s falling ratings.

"I’ll still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects," he said. "I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest running show with the same host in the same time slot. With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders."

King’s show has been a key component of the CNN prime-time schedule. The news network, faced with stiff competition from Fox News and MSNBC, has reportedly reached out to Piers Morgan and Katie Couric, among others, to join the network and take King’s 9 p.m. slot.
