LOS ANGELES/MANILA: Roxanne Barcelona, who heads up acquisitions for Philippines-based broadcaster GMA Network, saw a “marked improvement” in the drama and comedy slates presented by the Hollywood studios this year as compared with the 2009 offerings.

“This year’s new shows featured more legal and action dramas,” continued Barcelona, the VP of GMA Worldwide, the Filipino broadcaster’s acquisitions and sales arm.

A number of shows stood out for Barcelona, including CBS Studios International’s Hawaii Five-O—“I was a fan of the original series,” she says—Twentieth Century Fox’s Lonestar Disney Media Distribution’s No Ordinary Family, and Warner Bros.’s Nikita for The CW.

Hawaii Five O for obvious reasons is a personal favorite,” Barcelona says. “This remake did not disappoint me as the pilot script was very well written, production quality was very good, and there was a lot of action. Lonestar is a very good drama series, so with The Gates. No Ordinary Family’s story premise is refreshing.”

Across the board, Barcelona notes, “This year’s shows have better quality in all aspects: script, production quality and casting. Nothing from last year’s screening stood out. This year’s cop/crime/legal dramas all look fresh.”
