CBS Cancels As the World Turns

NEW YORK: CBS has opted not to renew the long-running daytime drama As the World Turns, which will end its 54-year run on the network in September 2010.

"Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades," said Chris Goutman, the show’s executive producer. "We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience."

Brian T. Cahill, the senior VP and managing director of TeleNext Media, said that a new outlet is being sought to carry the show, noting that the company is "open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of ATWT."

The series launched in 1956. Over the course of its history it won 58 Daytime Emmys. Its cancellation comes just a few months after CBS pulled the plug on Guiding Light, another long-running soap. Meanwhile, reports indicate that ABC may soon cancel One Life to Live
