Among the news from Turner’s Upfront presentation, it was revealed that TNT\u00a0is working with Ridley Scott\u00a0(The Martian<\/em>, Blade Runner<\/em>,\u00a0Alien: Covenant<\/em>) to develop a night of original science-fiction programming.<\/p>\n

The initial plans call for the block to serve as a showcase for hour-long series, short-form programs and other formats to be developed in collaboration with Scott. The slate is being produced by Scott’s\u00a0Scott Free Productions\u00a0in association with Turner’s\u00a0Studio T, with Scott and\u00a0David Zucker\u00a0(The Good Wife<\/em>,\u00a0The Man in the High Castle<\/em>) serving as executive producers and\u00a0Jordan Sheehan\u00a0(The Good Fight<\/em>,\u00a0The Terror<\/em>) and\u00a0Clayton Krueger\u00a0(JCVJ<\/em>, Mercy Street<\/em>) as co-executive producers.<\/p>\n

“We’re looking to create a programming block filled with the kind of imaginative, awe-inspiring storytelling that has made science fiction such a beloved and enduring genre,” said\u00a0Sarah Aubrey, the executive VP of original programming for TNT. “Ridley Scott has created some of the best and most popular science-fiction movies of all time, and we look forward to bringing his fans even more of his smart, sophisticated stories.”<\/p>\n

“Being given the creative license to generate and develop science fiction programming in a variety of formats for TNT is very exciting,” said Scott. “This genre is one of my favorites, and there are an infinite amount of original and innovative story ideas out there that we are looking forward to exploring with TNT. It is very exciting for all of us.”<\/p>\n

The Ridley Scott deal is one of several new announcements to come out of Turner’s Upfront presentation.<\/p>\n

Also coming to TNT is\u00a0Highland<\/em>, which has been given a pilot order. The scripted drama is written and executive produced by\u00a0Liz Sarnoff\u00a0(Lost<\/em>,\u00a0Barry<\/em>) and actress\/comedian\u00a0Margaret Cho\u00a0(Margaret Cho: PsyCHO<\/em>,\u00a0Drop Dead Diva<\/em>), who will also star. The pilot, which is inspired by Cho’s personal history with substance abuse, is a co-production of Marty Adelstein’s\u00a0Tomorrow Studios\u00a0and Turner’s\u00a0Studio T, with Cho serving as executive producer. Highland\u00a0will chronicle what happens when two extended, dysfunctional Korean-American families who share the same patriarch must come together after tragedy strikes.\u00a0“Liz Sarnoff and Margaret Cho’s brilliant script exposes Margaret’s warm heart and bracing humor, balancing powerful emotional truths with laugh-out-loud scenes and characters,” said Aubrey. “Highland\u00a0continues TNT’s commitment to bringing diverse voices and worlds to television. We look forward to making a pilot with such a singular talent as Margaret Cho.”<\/p>\n

TNT\u00a0has greenlit\u00a0Michael Moore Live from the Apocalypse<\/em>\u00a0(working title), a new nonfiction series from\u00a0Michael Moore\u00a0(Bowling for Columbine<\/em>,\u00a0TV Nation<\/em>). The series, set to premiere in the late fall, will pull back the curtain on everything from Washington politics to Wall Street shenanigans. Moore will direct and star in the series as well as executive produce alongside\u00a0Meghan O’Hara\u00a0(SiCKO<\/em>). Nick McKinney\u00a0(The Daily Show<\/em>,\u00a030 Days<\/em>) will produce. “Live from the Apocalypse<\/em>\u00a0will be a raucous gathering place for millions of our fellow citizens in desperate need of a break from the screaming pundits and the purveyors of ‘alternative facts,'” said Moore. “Our show will be dangerous and relentless. And it will be the destination for those who want to know what’s really going on and what they might be able to do about it.”<\/p>\n

Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex and the City<\/em>,\u00a0Divorce<\/em>), Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me<\/em>,\u00a0The Greatest Movie Ever Sold<\/em>)\u00a0and Refinery29 are working together on a new documentary for TNT tentatively titled Who Run the World?<\/em>\u00a0The new docuseries will focus on the issues that women face in today’s world and will be produced by Spurlock’s\u00a0Warrior Poets\u00a0and Parker’s\u00a0Pretty Matches Productions,\u00a0in partnership with Refinery29 and in association with\u00a0Studio T.<\/p>\n

TBS, meanwhile, greenlit\u00a0Close Enough<\/em>, a new animated series from\u00a0Regular Show<\/em>\u00a0creator\u00a0J.G. Quintel. The surreal comedy about a family growing up without getting old marks the first collaboration between\u00a0Cartoon Network Studios\u00a0and\u00a0Studio T. “We couldn’t be more excited to add one of animation’s most impressive and popular voices, J.G. Quintel, to our growing slate of animated series,” said\u00a0Brett Weitz, the executive VP of original programming for TBS. “J.G. hit the center of the demo target with\u00a0Regular Show<\/em>, and we\u2019re counting on him to bring this younger and more engaged audience to our network.”<\/p>\n

TBS\u00a0also ordered\u00a0Miracle Workers<\/em>, an anthology comedy series starring\u00a0Daniel Radcliffe\u00a0(Swiss Army Man<\/em>,\u00a0Now You See Me 2<\/em>, Harry Potter<\/em> films) and\u00a0Owen Wilson\u00a0(Midnight in Paris<\/em>,\u00a0Masterminds<\/em>). The series is executive produced by\u00a0Lorne Michaels\u00a0(Saturday Night Live<\/em>) and created by\u00a0Simon Rich\u00a0(Man Seeking Woman<\/em>), who will also serve as showrunner. Scheduled to launch on TBS in 2018 with seven episodes, the first season of\u00a0Miracle Workers\u00a0<\/em>will be a\u00a0Heaven-set workplace comedy based\u00a0on Rich’s book\u00a0What in God’s Name<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Further highlights include a new series from the comedy trio\u00a0The Dress Up Gang, whose viral videos include the\u00a0My Roommate, My Friend<\/em>\u00a0series. The Dress Up Gang creators\u00a0Donny Divanian\u00a0and\u00a0Cory Loykasek\u00a0are set to star in the series, with special appearances by fellow team member and creator\u00a0Robb Boardman. The new series is set in a surreal version of Los Angeles. Donny and Cory are roommates who look out for each other.<\/p>\n

The network is teaming up with\u00a0Snoop Dogg\u00a0to refresh and update the classic game show\u00a0The Joker’s Wild<\/em>. Snoop Dogg, who lists\u00a0The Joker’s Wild\u00a0<\/em>as his favorite game show growing up, will host TBS’s new version. The half-hour game show with a comedic edge is being produced by\u00a0Sony Pictures Television, in association with Studio T.<\/p>\n

TBS\u00a0is developing a fully interactive late-night programming block with sister company\u00a0Super Deluxe. The block will feature a variety of content from the multiplatform studio’s creative stable, all presented with interactive components to further engage the members of the mobile-first generation. TBS plans to launch the weekly 90-minute block this fall with a comedy lineup.<\/p>\n

TBS\u00a0also closed a new four-year deal with\u00a0Conan O’Brien’s\u00a0Team Coco\u00a0that will extend the\u00a0Conan<\/em>\u00a0brand into additional content experiences across all screens, including digital and branded content, podcasting, mobile gaming, pay TV and live tours.
