The Asylum will again serve as producer. The sequel is expected to hit Syfy in July 2014. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana\"><em>Sharknado <\/em>premiered on July 11 on Syfy to 1.4 million viewers. However, it was the social media frenzy surrounding the TV&nbsp;movie that drove the telefilm to its success. The film set a ratings record on its third showing, bringing in 2.1 million total viewers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana\">Thomas Vitale, the executive VP of programming and original movies at Syfy, said: &ldquo;Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name <em>Sharknado 2<\/em>. This response is another reminder of how <em>Sharknado<\/em> has become a pop culture phenomenon.
