TV Real shines a spotlight on the factual highlights from this year’s MIPCOM.<\/em><\/p>\n Amid the high-profile screenings that took place during MIPCOM were two exclusive first-episode showings of brand-new factual series: National Geographic\u2019s\u00a0MARS<\/em>, presented by FOX Networks Group Content Distribution, and\u00a0Planet Earth II<\/em>\u00a0from BBC Worldwide. With their dazzling visual quality, both blue-chip productions helped to underline the power of factual programming and its ability to stand out even among the big-budget dramas that are so often touted in today\u2019s marketplace.<\/p>\n The special preview episode of\u00a0MARS<\/em>, which hails from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and RadicalMedia, was followed by\u00a0a panel moderated by\u00a0World Screen<\/em>\u2019s Anna Carugati<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and featuring executive producer Justin Wilkes and author Stephen Petranek, among others.\u00a0Planet Earth II<\/em>, meanwhile, comes a decade after the original\u00a0Planet Earth\u00a0<\/em>and makes use of the latest filming technology to showcase the natural world. At MIPCOM,\u00a0BBC Worldwide finalized a co-production agreement with Tencent<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for the title, which will debut in the U.K. on BBC One and will simultaneously broadcast on Tencent\u2019s\u00a0v.qq.com<\/a>\u00a0platform. BBC Worldwide and the BBC Natural History Unit are also preparing another blue-chip series with\u00a0Ocean<\/em>, which will be\u00a0co-produced with the German public service broadcaster WDR<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Indeed, the natural world and wildlife showed their dominance in the factual-programming arena at MIPCOM.\u00a0ORF-Enterprise landed sales for a range of titles from its slate<\/a><\/strong>, notably for documentaries from its Universum strand that included the wildlife doc\u00a0Vanishing Kings: Lions of the Namib<\/em>.\u00a0Blue Ant International sold more than 300 hours<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of Ultra HD wildlife and nature content to broadcasters across Western Europe and Asia, with Amazon Prime Video in Japan among them. Sky Vision came to the market armed with\u00a0the new 4K wildlife series\u00a0Savage Kingdom<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which it picked up from Icon Films and Natural History Film Unit Botswana. ZDF Enterprises is distributing the blue-chip natural-history series\u00a0Borneo\u2019s Secret Kingdom<\/em>,\u00a0an Australia-Malaysia co-production<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that made use of local filming incentives. Smithsonian Channel and Earth Touch also\u00a0struck a deal to co-produce two films and a three-part series<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in the wildlife genre.<\/p>\n Among the other factual genres that saw solid sales at MIPCOM was lifestyle fare. Scripps Networks Interactive\u00a0presented 100-plus new lifestyle titles<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>at the market, and the company did\u00a0a deal with Canada\u2019s Quebecor Content<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for a package that featured content focused on real estate, architecture, design, house-flipping and renovations. Breakthrough Entertainment showcased\u00a0two new original unscripted shows from the SVOD platform Feeln<\/a><\/strong>, including the food-based\u00a0Breaking Bread with Brooke Burke<\/em>.<\/p>\n The true-crime wave that had many distributors riding high at MIPTV appears to have lost a bit of its momentum at MIPCOM but crime programming still remains in demand.
