{"id":9013,"date":"2016-08-03T11:11:07","date_gmt":"2016-08-03T15:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/escapade-brings-the-factual-experience-to-viewers\/"},"modified":"2016-08-04T09:44:56","modified_gmt":"2016-08-04T13:44:56","slug":"escapade-brings-the-factual-experience-to-viewers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/escapade-brings-the-factual-experience-to-viewers\/","title":{"rendered":"Escapade Media Brings the Factual Experience to Viewers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Natalie Lawley, the managing director at Escapade Media, discusses the company\u2019s factual slate and its focus on 4K content, virtual-reality components and titles that inspire viewers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Australia-based Escapade Media is an international television- and film-sales agent with an emphasis on children\u2019s, drama and factual programming. \u201cEscapade focuses on unique content,\u201d says Natalie Lawley, the company\u2019s managing director. \u201cWe\u2019re not so much in the volume business as we are in the [business of] specifics. We\u2019ll take something on that\u2019s very good and very different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawley explains: \u201cOne thing that we\u2019re hearing and seeing is that there isn\u2019t very much 4K content out there, so it\u2019s a bonus if you have 4K titles, and it\u2019s even better if you\u2019ve got something that\u2019s highly appealing, which is what we strive for. In line with that, we have focused heavily on securing finances and presales for 4K content that has virtual-reality (VR) components.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawley notes that \u201cthere are some areas in the world that are focusing on 4K at the moment, but there are also many areas that have just paid an incredible amount of money to upgrade to HD, so paying to upgrade to 4K is difficult and probably not on the scope for them just yet. There is currently a mix of [buyers] still wanting HD, but also wanting the VR component.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One title in Escapade\u2019s factual catalog with a virtual-reality element is\u00a0<em>Steve Backshall &amp; the Vertical Mile<\/em>, which sees the British naturalist and TV\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/img\/2016-08-03-Steve-Backshall.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"275\" height=\"203\" \/>presenter climb the north face of the Eiger. Lawley believes that because the title is shot in 4K and offers a virtual-reality component, \u201cthe audience buys into being there\u201d with Backshall as he climbs. The VR aspect is meant to offer a \u201ccomplete 360-degree view of what [Backshall] is seeing as he makes it toward the end,\u201d she says. \u201cThat will be available initially on the web.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another 4K title in the company\u2019s catalog is\u00a0<em>Status: Vacant<\/em>, a stylized documentary series that is a co-production between Escapade and Showrunner Productions. Each episode brings viewers along on a journey to explore abandoned locations around the world, including an Argentine village decimated by floodwaters.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lawley, lifestyle and travel are among the \u201cbread-and-butter content that remains on everyone\u2019s agenda.\u201d Escapade\u2019s lifestyle highlights include\u00a0<em>Food. Sail. Love<\/em>. Billed as a \u201cculinary voyage,\u201d the series focuses on Mediterranean cooking with a strong travel component.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rottnest &amp; the Mystery Islands<\/em>, which is in development, \u201cis quite a special title,\u201d Lawley says. Escapade is an executive producer on the project from Sea Dog TV International, which she describes as an \u201cextremely experienced and thoughtful company in underwater natural history.\u201d Lawley adds: \u201cRottnest is very remote and the species that are found on these islands are nowhere else in Australia. There\u2019s no other documentary in the marketplace at the moment that looks specifically at Rottnest and the evolution and uniqueness of the islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two-parter puts a spotlight on a marsupial called the quokka, which has captured the interest of travelers from around the world. The VR component associated with the title allows viewers to \u201chave the experience of living with the quokkas,\u201d Lawley says.<\/p>\n<p>Finding programs that engage viewers beyond simply tuning in has become increasingly important in the factual and lifestyle space. \u201cI hear the word \u2018inspiring\u2019 from buyers quite often,\u201d Lawley says. \u201cThe enjoyment or the experience for the audience is key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Lawley, ensuring that viewers have the experience they are looking for isn\u2019t just about \u201cgiving them something on an added platform in addition to the program, but [also about] inspiring them to actually go and do it.\u201d She adds: \u201cWhen viewers watch a series, what are they taking away from it? What are they learning? Are they inspired to travel? Are they inspired to cook the dish?\u201d According to Lawley, it\u2019s \u201cnot just about web recipes and so forth, but having content that is so entertaining and inspiring that viewers actually interact with that program afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuyers are acquiring the top titles, and their interest increases when you\u2019ve got a title that offers something different and strong,\u201d Lawley says. As far as factual programming, buyers are \u201cnot looking for standard documentary programs anymore.
