Julie Pizzi, president of Bunim\/Murray Productions, talks to\u00a0<em>TV Real\u00a0<\/em>about the evolution of\u00a0<em>The Challenge: USA\u00a0<\/em>and the reality TV genre as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/img\/2023-08-08-Julie-Pizzi-BunimMurray.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"182\" height=\"231\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/><strong>TV REAL:\u00a0<\/strong>How has\u00a0<em>The Challenge: USA<\/em>\u00a0evolved from season one?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:\u00a0<\/strong><em>The Challenge: USA<\/em>\u00a0season two combines CBS\u2019s reality talent with MTV\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Challenge\u00a0<\/em>talent in a fresh unpredictable format. This season, the location and house are more blue skies and aspirational than the more military-inspired season one. The format structure has also changed, allowing for exciting surprises and twists throughout the gameplay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV REAL:<\/strong>\u00a0Tell me about the casting for the stars from previous hit series; what were some of the key attributes?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:\u00a0<\/strong>We always look to cast competitive players who are both audience and fan favorites and personal fans of\u00a0<em>The Challenge\u00a0<\/em>franchise\u2014competitors who are excited to participate in\u00a0<em>The Challenge\u00a0<\/em>and conquer the game. The most interesting players are those who can play a social and political game as well as a physical game. We were able to bring on some of the most dynamic cast from\u00a0<em>Survivor<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Big Brother<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Amazing Race,<\/em>\u00a0as well as MTV\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Challenge<\/em>\u00a0franchise vets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV REAL:<\/strong>\u00a0What other spin-offs from\u00a0<em>The Challenge<\/em>\u00a0is BMP involved in?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:<\/strong>\u00a0Bunim\/Murray produces all of the spin-offs for MTV, CBS and Paramount+.\u00a0<em>The Challenge: World Championship<\/em>\u00a0brought all of the all-stars from the foreign [versions of]\u00a0<em>The Challenge<\/em>\u2014from Australia, Argentina and the U.K.\u2014and paired them up with MTV\u2019s franchise players for a world tournament.\u00a0<em>The Challenge: All-Stars<\/em>\u00a0features legendary cast from all 38 seasons of the series in a more comedic, nostalgic version of\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Challenge<\/em>\u00a0series, and\u00a0<em>The Challenge: USA<\/em>\u00a0for CBS sources players from CBS\u2019s iconic franchise series who have earned their stripes strategizing and competing for their way into becoming top-tier competitors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV REAL:\u00a0<\/strong>What has given\u00a0<em>The Challenge<\/em>\u00a0such longevity in the reality space?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>The Challenge<\/em>\u00a0was built on storytelling. In addition to the epic challenges and eliminations the cast participate in, they enter the game with backstory, history and relationships\u2014some dating back 20-plus years.\u00a0<em>The Challenge,<\/em>\u00a0at its core, is a long-running soap opera with dynamic and complex characters who have unique personalities and athletic prowess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV REAL:\u00a0<\/strong>What is BMP\u2019s wider ethos in terms of the type of reality programs it wants to bring to the market?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:<\/strong>\u00a0Bunim\/Murray has always been celebrated for its casting, storytelling and creativity. A Bunim\/Murray show is thoughtful and unexpected and delivers compelling storytelling. BMP has found success in reality competition, docusoap series, documentary, house-reality, game formats; there is no genre we as a company are not capable of executing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV REAL:<\/strong>\u00a0How have you seen the reality TV market evolve? What\u2019s working best today?<br \/>\n<strong>PIZZI:<\/strong>\u00a0That is, in fact, the million-dollar question. In the last few years, we have seen so much evolution in programming.
