The service went live at the end of March and was <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/cnn-shutting-down\/\">shuttered in a month<\/a><\/u> amid a series of strategy shifts at the new Warner Bros. Discovery, ones that are still playing out as the company prepares to lift the lid on the upcoming merged <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/david-zaslav-jb-perrette-outline-warner-bros-discovery-streaming-strategy\/\">HBO Max\/discovery+ service<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the CNN+ news and a fair bit of confusion over Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s streaming strategy, it was still a busy and fruitful year for doc producers and distributors in the streaming space. Wildbear Entertainment launched <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/wildbear-entertainment-rolls-out-history-streamer\/\">Chronicle, a new history streamer in Australia<\/a><\/u>. A+E Networks EMEA unveiled Crime+Investigation Play as a dedicated direct-to-consumer streaming service for <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/ae-networks-launching-true-crime-d2c-platform\/\">true-crime content<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/vix-picks-up-chefclub-content\/\">TelevisaUnivision\u2019s streaming service ViX<\/a><\/u> emerged as a new buyer in the U.S. and Latin America. Global sports streaming service <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/new-maradona-doc-to-stream-on-dazn\/\">DAZN served up a range of documentaries<\/a><\/u>, expanding its <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/dazn-launches-studio-drive-original-content\/\">investment in originals<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/fifa-unveils-football-streaming-platform\/\">FIFA launched a streaming platform<\/a><\/u> to deliver live domestic league games worldwide, stats, an archive of football matches and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/fifa-orders-another-way-the-forest-green-rovers-story\/\">original content<\/a><\/u>. MagellanTV ramped up its originals slate, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/magellantv-nigel-marven-ink-content-pact\/\">including partnering with Nigel Marven<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/itv-unveils-first-factual-commissions-for-itvx\/\">ITV revealed its first slate of factual commissions for ITVX<\/a><\/u>, which launched in December. Tinopolis-backed Mech TV launched Mech+, a VOD streaming service dedicated to <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/mech-tv-launches-vod-platform\/\">robotics, science and engineering content<\/a><\/u>. And, of course, the global SVOD giants continued their investments, including Netflix <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/netflix-expands-natural-history-slate\/\">expanding its natural-history slate<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/netflix-builds-on-roster-of-love-dating-shows\/\">renewing its most successful love and dating shows<\/a><\/u> while ramping up its unscripted offerings in key markets like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/netflix-expands-japanese-unscripted-slate\/\">Japan<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/disney-to-launch-five-new-u-k-unscripted-originals\/\">Disney+ also expanded its non-scripted offerings in EMEA<\/a><\/u>, as did <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/paramount-reveals-first-u-k-original-unscripted-slate\/\">Paramount+<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the AVOD\/FAST space is becoming more lucrative for distributors, especially those with large catalogs. Pluto TV launched new channels in partnership with a range of content providers, including <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/pluto-tv-adds-pair-of-ae-networks-uk-channels\/\">A+E Networks UK.<\/a><\/u> Autentic and OneGate Media partnered to launch the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/autentic-onegate-media-launch-fast-channel\/\">FAST channel Adventure Earth<\/a><\/u>, featuring nature and wildlife documentaries. Quintus bolstered its <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/quintus-unveils-new-true-crime-avod-channel\/\">FAST channel bouquet, which includes FD Crime<\/a><\/u>. Blue Ant Media continued the expansion of its FAST channels, which include <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/blue-ant-fast-channels-launch-on-freevee-in-u-s\/\">Love Nature and Homeful<\/a><\/u>. Tubi unveiled a brand-new <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/tubi-launches-gordon-ramsay-fast-channel\/\">Gordon Ramsay FAST channel<\/a><\/u>. A dedicated FAST channel featuring <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/the-jamie-oliver-channel-launches-on-freevee\/\">titles fronted by Jamie Oliver<\/a><\/u> rolled out on Amazon Freevee, which emerged as a significant home of both acquired and commissioned factual fare in 2022. The AVOD platform greenlit new originals like the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/new-series-from-judge-judy-for-amazon-freevee\/\">court program <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/new-series-from-judge-judy-for-amazon-freevee\/\">Tribunal<\/a><\/em><\/u> and the reality show <em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/amazon-freevee-orders-coming-of-age-sports-docuseries\/\">God. Family. Football.<\/a><\/u><\/em> and inked a two-year licensing deal to bring back all 14 seasons of <em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/amazon-freevee-bringing-back-the-suze-orman-show\/\">The Suze Orman Show<\/a><\/u><\/em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/amazon-freevee-bringing-back-the-suze-orman-show\/\"> to the U.S., the U.K. and Germany<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>The last year was also marked by significant M&amp;A activity, including <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/banijay-moves-acquire-beyond-international\/\">Banijay acquiring Beyond International<\/a><\/u>. Fremantle also inked a slew of deals, among them majority stakes in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/fremantle-invests-in-israels-silvio-productions\/\">Israel\u2019s Silvio Productions<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/fremantle-picks-up-72-films-stake\/\">72 Films<\/a><\/u>, the independent production outfit behind <em>All or Nothing: Arsenal<\/em> and <em>9\/11: One Day in America<\/em>, and a 51 percent interest in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/fremantle-takes-majority-stake-in-wildstar\/\">Wildstar Films<\/a><\/u>. Red Arrow Studios&#8217; U.S. production companies, a portfolio that includes\u00a0Kinetic Content, Left\/Right, 44 Blue, Half Yard Productions and Dorsey Pictures, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/red-arrow-studios-sells-u-s-operations-peter-chernin\/\">were sold to Peter Chernin&#8217;s The North Road Company<\/a><\/u>. BBC Studios became <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/bbc-studios-takes-full-control-of-voltage-tv\/\">100 percent owner of Voltage TV<\/a><\/u> in the U.K. LEONINE Studios bought a 50 percent controlling interest in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/leonine-takes-stake-in-gebrueder-beetz-filmproduktion\/\">gebrueder beetz filmproduktion, which specializes in documentary features and series<\/a><\/u>, and acquired the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2022\/05\/25\/leonine-acquires-hyperbole-medien\/\">Berlin-based production outfit Hyperbole Medien<\/a><\/u>. Newen Studios acquired a majority stake in the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2022\/07\/27\/newen-studios-takes-majority-stake-in-rise-films\/\">London-based production house Rise Films<\/a><\/u>. ITV agreed to purchase a <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/itv-acquires-natural-history-producer-plimsoll\/\">majority interest in Plimsoll Productions<\/a><\/u>. Amcomri Entertainment <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/amcomri-acquires-flame-media\/\">acquired the assets of Flame Media<\/a><\/u>. Blue Ant International took full ownership of the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/blue-ant-international-acquires-drive-media-rights\/\">U.K.-based distributor Drive Media Rights<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/sony-pictures-television-buys-industrial-media\/\">Sony Pictures Television acquired Industrial Media<\/a><\/u>, expanding its footprint and capabilities\u00a0in nonfiction and documentary television production. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/sk-global-acquires-critical-content\/\">SK Global purchased Critical Content<\/a><\/u> from Anchorage Capital Group.<\/p>\n<p>Creative alliances and first-look deals also remained critical last year as IP owners sought to align with key talent. Of note, Lionsgate entered into a first-look agreement with <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/lionsgate-in-first-look-deal-with-high-on-the-hog-producers\/\">producers Karis Jagger and Fabienne Toback (<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/lionsgate-in-first-look-deal-with-high-on-the-hog-producers\/\">High on the Hog<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/lionsgate-in-first-look-deal-with-high-on-the-hog-producers\/\">)<\/a><\/u> and with <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/jenny-mccarthy-wahlberg-donnie-wahlberg-in-first-look-deal-with-lionsgate\/\">Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg and Donnie Wahlberg<\/a><\/u> for unscripted projects through their Work Baby Productions banner. HGTV signed a new exclusive multiyear talent deal with <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/hgtv-extends-talent-deal-with-property-brothers-stars\/\">renovation and real estate stars Drew and Jonathan Scott<\/a><\/u>. BBC Studios Natural History Unit entered into a one-year development pact with <u><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvreal\/bbc-studios-nhu-pacts-with-james-reed-underdog-films\/\">Underdog Films and its founder, James Reed<\/a><\/u>, who directed the Academy Award-winning <em>My Octopus Teacher<\/em>.
