The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has unveiled the nominees for the news and current affairs categories, with eight nominees spanning six countries.<\/p>\n
Programs from the U.K. and Brazil are nominated in both categories. Other titles in the news section come from Qatar and France, while Nigerian and German programs are represented in the current affairs category.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan: Taliban Takeover<\/em>, Afghanistan Crisis\u2014News Coverage<\/em>, ITV News: Storming of The Capitol<\/em> and Jornal Nacional: Prevent Senior Case<\/em> are contenders for the news award.<\/p>\n From Al Jazeera English, Afghanistan: Taliban Takeover<\/em> followed as the company\u2019s reporters stayed on the ground after the Taliban took control of the presidential palace in Kabul in August 2021.<\/p>\n Euronews\u2019 Afghanistan Crisis\u2014News Coverage<\/em> saw Anelise Borges dispatched to Kabul armed with just an iPhone. She secured interviews with the Taliban and documented fears of at-risk Afghans.<\/p>\n ITV News: Storming of the Capitol<\/em> is ITV Productions\/ITV News\u2019 coverage of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021. Its reporters captured the insurrection from the heart of the mob.<\/p>\n In Jornal Nacional: Prevent Senior Case<\/em>, Globo revealed how a health insurer used Covid patients as guinea pigs to test unproven treatments and covered up deaths of patients rushed to palliative care to cut expenses.<\/p>\n Nominees in the current affairs category are Black Axe<\/em>, Domingo Espetacular: Parkinson\u2019s Research<\/em>, Exposure\u2014Fearless: The Women Fighting Putin<\/em> and Panorama: Slahi Und Seine Folterer<\/em> (In Search of Monsters<\/em>).<\/p>\n BBC Africa Eye\u2019s Black Axe<\/em> investigated the titular organized crime group. Referred to as a cult in Nigeria, the group has been accused of countless murders and is estimated to earn millions of dollars through internet fraud.<\/p>\n From Record TV, Domingo Espetacular: Parkinson\u2019s Research<\/em> follows the journey of Brazilian journalist Andr\u00e9 Tan, who underwent an experimental treatment in the U.S. for Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n Exposure\u2014Fearless: The Women Fighting Puti<\/em>n, from the U.K.\u2019s Hardcash Productions, The Economist and ITV, centers on three women ahead of the Russian elections. For opposition candidates Violetta and Irina and activist Lusya, it is a story of resilience, with the hope that a democratic Russia can emerge.<\/p>\n NDR-Fernsehen\u2019s Panorama: Slahi Und Seine Folterer<\/em> (In Search of Monsters<\/em>) tells the story of M. Slahi, who was incarcerated in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo for 14 years.
