MEXICO CITY: Grupo Televisa has come out in support of the planned constitutional reform to the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors in Mexico. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Pact for Mexico, proposed by President Enrique Peña Nieto and leaders of the main political parties, was welcomed by Televisa, which says that the reforms promote competition in the broadcasting and telecoms sectors. The company said that the initiative should establish an environment that is conducive to meaningful investment in these sectors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of broadcast television, the initiative will present Grupo Televisa with some challenges. "For that reason, Grupo Televisa will continue to invest in the production of best-in-class content, as it has for over 60 years, promoting the country’s national identity and culture both in Mexico and in more than 60 countries where our content is available," the company said in a statement. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As for telecommunications, Grupo Televisa has made investments and looking forward to competing on a level playing field with the new rules. "Grupo Televisa will continue to actively participate in the development and offering of pay-TV services, broadband Internet access and fixed and mobile telephony, at lower prices and better quality," a statement from the company reads. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s American Movil has also come out to say that it supports the proposal, despite the fact that the bill aims to loosen Slim’s hold on the telecommunications market.
