TV Kids takes a look at the activities in the children\u2019s programming sector from the recent MIPJunior and MIPCOM<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The weekend before the official MIPCOM kickoff, MIPJunior welcomed 590 buyers among its 1,400 delegates. The first day of the event saw a packed keynote address from Stephen Davis<\/a>, the chief content officer and executive VP of Hasbro and president of Hasbro Studios, who was in conversation with World Screen<\/em>\u2019s Anna Carugati.<\/p>\n

The Saturday lineup also included the MIPJunior International Pitch,\u00a0which was won by\u00a0The Boy Who Switched Off the Sun<\/em><\/a>\u00a0from the U.K.\u2019s Fourth Wall Creative. Attendees were later treated to a World Premiere TV Screening of Cyber Group Studios\u2019\u00a0Zorro the Chronicles<\/em>. The company\u00a0signed up a slew of broadcasters for the show<\/a>, which was produced by Cyber Group in collaboration with Zorro Productions International and Blue Spirit Studios for France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions and Italy\u2019s RAI.<\/p>\n

Saturday night\u2019s massive downpour in Cannes left MIPJunior\u2019s Martinez venue flooded, but nonetheless the conference program went on as scheduled on Sunday. Having relocated to the Palais, the morning began with\u00a0the View from the Top: What Do Kids\u2019 Buyers Want? session<\/a>, which featured Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, Lagard\u00e8re Active’s Caroline Cochaux, Disney’s Karen K. Miller, Cartoon Network’s Adina Pitt and KiKA’s Sebastian Debertin. Carugati moderated the panel, which was capped off with the presentation of the first-ever\u00a0World Screen Kids\u2019 Content Trendsetter Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Sunday sessions also featured a keynote with Russell Hicks, the president of content development and production at the Nickelodeon Group, and Dan Schneider, creator and executive producer of such hits as\u00a0Sam & Cat<\/em>,\u00a0iCarly<\/em>,\u00a0Drake & Josh\u00a0<\/em>and the new series\u00a0Game Shakers<\/em>, which I had the pleasure of moderating.<\/p>\n

SVOD, apps and the like were talking points during the MIPJunior and MIPCOM markets among the kids\u2019 programming community. Cartoon Network EMEA announced the\u00a0rollout of a new digital service<\/a>, Cartoon Network Anything, which is a micro network that offers bite-sized content tailored exclusively to mobile devices. Hopster\u00a0launched a localized French-language app<\/a>, with new additions to the content lineup that included shows from Entertainment One. The digital startup also signed a multi-territory content deal with DHX Media to release eight new titles on its English-version app. Entertainment One revealed\u00a0a comprehensive digital <\/a>strategy<\/a>\u00a0for its new preschool property\u00a0PJ Masks<\/em>\u00a0that includes a series of music videos, a free app and a variety of online content that will begin rolling out next month.<\/p>\n

The trend toward reboots and an appetite for properties with built-in brand awareness were again present at the market. A long-term pact announced during MIPCOM between Mattel, its preschool subsidiary HIT Entertainment and 9 Story Media Group will see the\u00a0return of the classic kids’ <\/a>brands<\/a>\u00a0Barney<\/em> & Friends<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Angelina Ballerina<\/em>. Studio 100\u00a0licensed\u00a0Nils Holgersson<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Wild Adventures of Blinky Bill<\/em><\/a>, two CGI series based on existing global brands, to Finland\u2019s Nelonen Media. The company also\u00a0scored a deal with Al Jazeera Media Network<\/a>\u00a0for the new CGI and classic versions of\u00a0Vic the Viking<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Heidi<\/em>. DHX Media\u00a0clinched a deal with Turner Broadcasting<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The Series<\/em>, which is based on the Sony Pictures Animation film franchise.<\/p>\n

There were some new original properties making noise during the market as well. Zodiak Kids\u00a0landed a number of agreements<\/a>\u00a0for the Amazon Studios original series\u00a0Tumble Leaf<\/em>,\u00a0Creative Galaxy<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street<\/em>. Portfolio Entertainment\u00a0sold its new animated series\u00a0Freaktown<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to several kids’ broadcasters, including Cartoon Network in Asia Pacific. Channel 5’s Milkshake! commissioned the CGI series\u00a0Dave’s Dinosaurs<\/em>\u00a0from Absolutely Cuckoo<\/a>, the studio behind\u00a0Waybuloo<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Wissper<\/em>. Rainbow unveiled that\u00a0filming is now under way<\/a>\u00a0on its brand-new live-action series\u00a0My American Friend<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Rainbow also used MIPCOM as a venue to announce its\u00a0acquisition of the animation outfit Bardel<\/a>, which is one of Canada’s largest studios. \u201cNew productions, new forms of entertainment and new media all mean you can\u2019t stand still in this industry,\u201d said Iginio Straffi, the president and CEO of Rainbow Group. \u201cAt Rainbow we know this, which is why we are dedicated to innovation, creativity and a commitment to international growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other big news in Cannes included the announcement of the\u00a0nominees for the International Emmy Kids Awards<\/a>, with the event, in which\u00a0TV Kids<\/em>\u00a0is a partner, set to move from New York to MIPTV in Cannes.<\/p>\n
