{"id":29965,"date":"2025-06-25T08:30:04","date_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/tvkids\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T08:45:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T12:45:04","slug":"cree-language-kokum-dot-begins-filming-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cree-language-kokum-dot-begins-filming-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Cree-Language Kokum &amp; Dot Begins Filming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ekosi Productions has begun filming the Indigenous children\u2019s series <em>Kokum &amp; Dot<\/em>, which will feature the Cree language, for TELUS.<\/p>\n<p>Helmed by director and producer April Johnson (<em>Reginald the Vampire<\/em>) and starring Indigenous actor and musician Renae Morriseau (<em>North of 60<\/em>), the series is inspired by the life and work of Elder Dorothy Visser, a language instructor and educator who uses puppetry to teach Cree language and culture to children.<\/p>\n<p>In every episode of<em> Kokum &amp; Dot<\/em>, Dorothy engages with Dot\u2014a rod-arm hand puppet who represents Kokum\u2019s inner child\u2014and asks about Dot\u2019s day. When Dot struggles to find the right words to describe how she feels, Kokum Dorothy introduces new Cree words to help her explain herself. These works then inspire Kokum to share a childhood memory with an important message.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to introducing Cree vocabulary, each episode\u2019s theme will center around one of Cree culture\u2019s seven guiding principles: love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth. Kokum Dorothy will touch upon one principal in every story she shares.<\/p>\n<p>The series is written by Jules Koostachin (<em>Angela\u2019s Shadow<\/em>, <em>Molly of Denali<\/em>) and features original music by Morriseau\u2019s music group M\u2019Girl, recorded by Ben Kaplan.<\/p>\n<p><em>Kokum &amp; Dot<\/em> is being produced by Ekosi Productions and Second Son. It was made possible with the support of TELUS Independent, Creative BC, IPF\/CMF and the Indigenous Screen Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach episode of <em>Kokum &amp; Dot<\/em> illustrates the power of language, the beauty of imagination and honors the wisdom and experiences of elders,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIt also serves as a gentle reminder of the special bond between elders and young learners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTELUS independent is proud to walk beside this luminous, heart-centered children\u2019s series,\u201d commented Christina Willings, head of production for TELUS Independent. \u201c<em>Kokum &amp; Dot<\/em> will anchor the Cree language in some of children\u2019s earliest memories of media and storytelling and speak directly into the development of community values for Indigenous and settler children alike.
