{"id":27728,"date":"2024-06-07T07:55:16","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T11:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/creative-keynote-marc-brown\/"},"modified":"2024-06-07T08:36:02","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T12:36:02","slug":"creative-keynote-marc-brown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/creative-keynote-marc-brown\/","title":{"rendered":"Creative Keynote: Marc Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The third day of the TV Kids Summer Festival wrapped with a keynote from acclaimed children\u2019s author Marc Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Brown\u2019s <em>Arthur<\/em> ran for 25 years on PBS, and his new series, <em>Hop<\/em>, landed on Max this year. You can watch his keynote conversation with <em>TV Kids<\/em>\u2019 Kristin Brzoznowski <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreenevents.com\/festivals\/marc-brown\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Arthur<\/em> became the longest-running animated kids\u2019 show in history, but I wasn\u2019t finished,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI found while working on <em>Arthur<\/em> how much I really love telling stories through animation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After sketching a frog with one leg that is shorter than the other, Brown sat down with Peter Hirsch, the head writer for <em>Arthur<\/em>, and his son Tolon, a producer on <em>Arthur<\/em>, to brainstorm ideas. The result was <em>Hop<\/em>, a preschool comedy that premiered on Max in the U.S. in April.<\/p>\n<p>Representation and diversity, and encouraging kids to recognize and celebrate their uniqueness, was paramount for Brown and the team behind the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt that we could offer children something that\u2019s helpful and hopeful. That\u2019s what we wanted <em>Hop<\/em> to do. I said to Peter, do you have any guidelines for working with the writers? And he said, Yes, we have to have a big whammy and a little whammy and look for things that are surprising, things that are exciting, where emotions are high in the scene, and we\u2019re always looking for something to pull the viewer in early on in the story. The big whammy, of course, comes three-quarters of the way through the show. Something that is visually exciting and full of emotion. Another guideline for the show is we see the plots as simple but grounded in big emotions. We want to know how characters feel about an event. The way they feel about something is almost as important as the event itself. And I always like to add a dash of quirky. Peter always likes to say that I\u2019m the architect, he\u2019s the engineer, and Tolon\u2019s the general contractor. We\u2019re a pretty good team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On crafting the look and tone for the show, Brown said: \u201cI was so comfortable and grounded in the way <em>Arthur<\/em> was done visually that I thought if it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it. I was conscious of the color palette that we used.
