{"id":23819,"date":"2022-09-23T08:50:23","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T12:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2.worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/worldscreen.com\/"},"modified":"2022-09-26T09:03:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-26T13:03:10","slug":"little-engine-fuels-big-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/little-engine-fuels-big-stories\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Engine Fuels Big Stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Little Engine Moving Pictures\u2019 Maria Kennedy and Kyle Perez talk to <\/em>TV Kids<em> about the distribution division\u2019s approach and strategy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It has been just about a year since Little Engine Moving Pictures launched its distribution division, and things have been full steam ahead ever since. \u201cWe\u2019re boutique, but our mandate and worldview are international,\u201d says Kennedy, owner and executive producer. \u201cWe\u2019ve been building relationships with the goal of attracting buyers outside of Canada and simultaneously selling premium global kids\u2019 shows into North America. Despite the TV and media industry entering deeply uncertain territory, we\u2019ve been very fortunate to experience exciting growth with new international partners and license deals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/img\/2022-09-22-Maria_Kennedy-Headshot.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"165\" height=\"261\" \/>Within Canada, Little Engine has partnered with TVOkids, Knowledge Kids, Shaw Rocket Fund, CBC Kids, TFO, SRC Radio-Canada, Spafax\/Air Canada in-flight entertainment, OMNI, Muslim Kids TV, Canada Media Fund, Ontario Creates, Bell Fund, Cogeco and Rogers Telefund. Outside of Canada, deals have been struck with ABC Australia; Super RTL in Germany, Sandbox\/Hopster and Hop! channel in Israel, Daekyo in South Korea, VME and HITN in the U.S. and VA Media in Australia for YouTube\/Sci-Fi Central. And new partnerships and deals are in the works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are actively looking to expand our offering in kids and family\u2014short- and long-form, live-action and animation, preschool and bridge to tween and teen\u2014through strategic partnerships with global producers whose creative and corporate missions align with that of Little Engine,\u201d Kennedy says.<\/p>\n<p>Perez, head of new business and distribution, adds, \u201cOur current library includes titles like <em>Baby Baby<\/em> and <em>Scout &amp; the Gumboot Kids <\/em>by Imagine Create Media, <em>Sophie la Girafe<\/em> by KLB Productions, <em>Dr. Cheddar<\/em> by Invisible, Inc. and our very own <em>Cutie Pugs<\/em>,<em> Now You Know<\/em> and<em> The Picco Incident<\/em>. We have series versioned to French, Korean, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and Russian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy says that the company\u2019s boutique approach and streamlined strategy for getting shows to market set it apart from larger distributors. \u201cWe\u2019re being recognized for our transparency, kindness, dedication to open communication, hard work ethic, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/img\/2022-09-22-Little-Engine-Moving-Pictures_ITEM_Tiny-and-Tall-(2).jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"289\" height=\"182\" \/>global focus on each title in our library and our openness to new distribution strategies,\u201d notes Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>A particular highlight of their slate is <em>Tiny and Tall<\/em>, which marks Little Engine\u2019s first venture into 3D motion-capture animation technology. \u201cOur creative team, led by showrunner Ben Mazzotta, has pushed themselves to imagine a visual feast of the senses, with Pixar-esque characters living in a fantastical Seussian ultra-colorful world,\u201d Kennedy explains.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tiny and Tall<\/em> creator and writer Madeleine Donohue and co-creator, writer and art director Mazzotta and the writing team are working with mo-cap animation service partners Dark Slope Studios to deliver a preschool series that features friendship founded on difference and acceptance. It also includes simple preschool math, with the idea of \u201cdifferences\u201d explored in a tangible way. \u201c<em>Tiny and Tall<\/em> is sweet, silly and timely, with a beautiful nod to inclusion and representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make sure to work with consultants and educational advisors,\u201d says Kennedy. \u201cWe hire BIPOC writers and creatives. We\u2019re constantly looking for new voices, and we want to foster and facilitate setting up lifelong careers for our new creators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Tiny and Tall <\/em>was among the projects to come from Little Engine\u2019s Preschool Series Pitch. The initiative launched in 2020 and received 70 pitches from across Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. The company ended up optioning two of them: <em>Tiny and Tall<\/em> and another project that is still in development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re investing more into our development slate,\u201d says Kennedy. \u201cWhat hasn\u2019t changed is our commitment to delivering a pitch bible, pilot script and demo to prospective buyers. Because our brands are visually diverse, a demo is necessary to show what we can do as a boutique production studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little Engine has also partnered with new creators and producers like singer\/songwriter George Canyon with preschool music variety series <em>Happy Trails<\/em> and Pam Lita Tavedikul of World Star Network as a distributor on <em>BoyBand The Series<\/em>, currently in production in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Little Engine is pushing beyond preschool into tween and teen original IP. <em>Benjamin Ojo: Junior High Private Eye<\/em> is an \u201cAgatha Christie-meets-middle school\u201d mystery series created, written and co-executive produced by Canadian TikTok content creator Tope Babalola.<\/p>\n<p>Little Engine is also tapping into \u201990s nostalgia with the teen coming-of-age drama-comedy series <em>Mixtape<\/em>, based on author Brad Abraham\u2019s comic series of the same title, set in the alt-music era of the early 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the edgy LGBTQ+ superhero teen drama <em>Local Heroes<\/em>, co-created by writer Ben Carrozza and Mazzotta.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to have up to ten shows in development and two to four shows in production in any given year. \u201cWe&#8217;ve built the capacity, talent and experience to achieve that with live-action CGI-hybrid series. And we partner with best-in-class animation studios on the animated side,\u201d Kennedy remarks. \u201cWe aim to achieve a balanced revenue mix of live-action original IP produced in-house and third-party service production with global partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the distribution catalog, the plan is to expand to 20 to 25 titles and a couple of hundred hours of content, delivering a compact but diverse global offering for buyers,\u201d adds Perez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLittle Engine intends to remain true to our name and our DNA: to be a boutique creator-driven studio and distribution company that offers a mentoring, openhearted home to creators and producers who want to make distinctive, premium live-action and animated kids\u2019 and family series that are globally impactful, entertaining and bring joy to our audience,\u201d Kennedy says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Little Engine Moving Pictures\u2019 Maria Kennedy and Kyle Perez talk about the distribution division\u2019s approach and strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":350,"featured_media":23820,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"pmpro_default_level":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,21],"tags":[1828],"class_list":["post-23819","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","","category-profiles","category-top-stories","tag-little-engine-moving-pictures","pmpro-has-access"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.7 -
