Nicolas Atlan, the president of Gaumont U.S. and a longtime animation executive, discussed the storied French studio\u2019s approach to crafting kids\u2019 and family titles at the TV Kids Summer Festival.<\/p>\n

Atlan participated in a keynote conversation with TV Kids<\/em>\u2019 Anna Carugati that you can view here<\/a><\/strong>. New platforms \u201care helping us to do higher-quality projects because of the budgets that we have,\u201d Atlan noted, but added that the focus always has to remain on putting kids first.<\/p>\n

Atlan said that animation has been key to the programming strategies of many of the global streaming services, creating new opportunities for Gaumont. A show like Stillwater<\/em>, for example, would have been a challenge to land on a traditional linear broadcaster. Based on Zen Shorts<\/em> by Jon J. Muth, it launched on Apple TV+.<\/p>\n

On the strategy for the slate today, he said the focus is on IP and talent, with teams operating out of the U.S. and France. \u201cWe\u2019re able to try to get the best of both worlds. We\u2019re always in search of talent and IP. And that can be anything. We\u2019re trying to option a TikTok sketch that we think could become something. Or it could be a book or a comic book or a video game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe work with talent,\u201d Atlan continued. \u201cWe spend money on development because we think this is the fuel to make the best show possible, and we come prepared in front of the broadcaster or platform. We spend money on design, scripts, bibles, whatever can help us be able to sell the show or partner with a broadcaster or platform.\u201d<\/p>\n

The studio works hard to be \u201ctalent-friendly,\u201d Atlan added. The roster of A-list talent it has attracted includes Paul McCartney, with Gaumont producing the animated feature High in the Clouds<\/em>, based on the artist\u2019s children\u2019s novel, for Netflix. \u201cHe\u2019s very involved,\u201d Atlan said. \u201cHe loves animation. It\u2019s a dream to work with him. He\u2019s completely involved and loves the artistic process, talking to directors, writers, designers, producers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given Gaumont\u2019s proficiency in drama for adults and kids\u2019 and family animation, the studio is exploring opportunities for live-action scripted for young audiences. Atlan said there are also opportunities to take a single piece of IP and develop it in animation form for kids and live action for older audiences. \u201cI don\u2019t like the word \u2018franchise.\u2019 We\u2019re trying to develop something around the brand.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
