Indeed, our playground grew tremendously in 2021, including the launch of two super successful virtual festivals. The increasing importance of AVOD platforms in the kids\u2019 business, a need for new funding models and the creative revolution unleashed by the SVOD streamers were all key themes across the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/tv-kids-festival-recap\/\">15 panels and keynotes at the inaugural TV Kids Festival, which took place in February<\/a> (with the panels logging more than 24,000 views). Our second festival, in June, was even more impressive, attracting the likes of Mattel\u2019s Ynon Kreiz, WarnerMedia\u2019s Tom Ascheim, Aardman\u2019s Sean Clarke, M6\u2019s Philippe Bony, Disney\u2019s Ayo Davis and YouTube\u2019s Nadine Zylstra, among many others. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/tv-kids-summer-festival-recap\/\">Diversity, AVOD, funding models and the always important role of partnerships were key themes<\/a> across the TV Kids Summer Festival. We\u2019re so thrilled to be deep in the midst of planning our TV Kids Festival 2022 edition, which will run from February 1 to 4 with some 20 keynotes, panels and premieres. <strong>Stay tuned for free registration opening on January 19!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>TV Kids<\/em> also produced a raft of our super-popular in-demand reports (look out for new ones coming later this month) and launched the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/tv-kids-screenings-festival-now-live\/\">TV Kids Screenings Festival ahead of MIPCOM and MIPJunior<\/a>, highlighting some of the most compelling new IP on the market today. And there is an awful lot of it, as the growing SVOD landscape, booming AVOD opportunities and continued investments from pubcasters have powered new narrative techniques and an increased focus on diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, cutting through the clutter is never easy, so known IP has remained a powerful tool in producers\u2019 and distributors\u2019 arsenals. Notably, books continue to serve as fodder for new TV series and specials. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/paramount-sets-big-nate-adaptation\/\">Based on the best-selling children\u2019s books and comics from Lincoln Peirce<\/a>, <em>Big Nate<\/em>arrives on Paramount+ this year. Disney Branded Television and UnbeliEVAble Entertainment are developing an <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/disney-branded-tv-eva-longoria-partner-for-book-adaptation\/\">adaptation of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/disney-branded-tv-eva-longoria-partner-for-book-adaptation\/\"><em>Sal &amp; Gabi Break the Universe<\/em><\/a>. Dandelooo is set to adapt <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/dandelooo-prepping-gastons-emotions-tv-adaptation\/\"><em>Gaston\u2019s Emotions<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/dandelooo-prepping-gastons-emotions-tv-adaptation\/\">, written by author and illustrator Aur\u00e9lie Chien Chow Chine<\/a>. Cyber Group Studios scored the audiovisual adaptation rights to the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/cyber-group-secures-rights-adapt-phobos-book-series\/\">best-selling adventure books <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/cyber-group-secures-rights-adapt-phobos-book-series\/\"><em>Phobos<\/em><\/a>. Tiger Aspect Kids &amp; Family clinched a development deal for the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/what-the-ladybird-heard-series-in-development\/\">best-selling picture book series <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/what-the-ladybird-heard-series-in-development\/\"><em>What the Ladybird Heard<\/em><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/bbc-childrens-orders-a-kind-of-spark-adaptation-from-9-story\/\">BBC Children\u2019s ordered <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/bbc-childrens-orders-a-kind-of-spark-adaptation-from-9-story\/\"><em>A Kind of Spark<\/em><\/a>, based on the award-winning book by neurodivergent author Elle McNicoll. Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) is bringing the best-selling <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/karma-and-jonar-books-get-tv-treatment-for-viaplay\/\"><em>Karma and Jonar<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/karma-and-jonar-books-get-tv-treatment-for-viaplay\/\"> children\u2019s books to Viaplay<\/a>. It also aligned with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2021\/09\/07\/ronja-the-robbers-daughter-being-reimagined-for-viaplay\/\">Filmlance International and The Astrid Lindgren Company to adapt <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2021\/09\/07\/ronja-the-robbers-daughter-being-reimagined-for-viaplay\/\"><em>Ronja the Robber\u2019s Daughter<\/em><\/a>. Apple TV+ ordered <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apple-orders-amber-brown-book-to-series-adaptation\/\"><em>Amber Brown<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apple-orders-amber-brown-book-to-series-adaptation\/\">, based on the best-selling book series by Paula Danziger<\/a>. Lime Pictures secured a TV option deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/planet-omar-book-series-optioned-for-tv\/\">Hachette Children\u2019s Group for the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/planet-omar-book-series-optioned-for-tv\/\"><em>Planet Omar<\/em><\/a> book series from Zanib Mian. Leading Indian scripted producer Applause Entertainment teamed with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/applause-entertainment-expands-into-animation\/\">children\u2019s comic book powerhouse Amar Chitra Katha<\/a>. Silvergate Media acquired the rights to the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/vamos-picture-books-being-adapted-for-tv\/\">bilingual picture book series <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/vamos-picture-books-being-adapted-for-tv\/\"><em>\u00a1Vamos!<\/em><\/a> Netflix ordered <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/ava-duvernay-adapting-wings-of-fire-for-netflix\/\"><em>Wings of Fire<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/ava-duvernay-adapting-wings-of-fire-for-netflix\/\">, a family-targeted animated event series based on the best-selling book series<\/a>, with Ava DuVernay on board the project. Zodiak Kids Studios entered into a co-development deal with Asner Productions to develop a live-action series based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/zodiak-kids-in-co-development-deal-for-detective-series\/\">book series <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/zodiak-kids-in-co-development-deal-for-detective-series\/\"><em>The Wollstonecraft Detective Agency<\/em><\/a> and will adapt <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/zodiak-kids-secures-development-deal-for-cookie-book-series\/\">the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/zodiak-kids-secures-development-deal-for-cookie-book-series\/\"><em>Cookie<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/zodiak-kids-secures-development-deal-for-cookie-book-series\/\"> books by Konnie Huq<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/teamto-picks-up-trio-of-childrens-holiday-books\/\">TeamTO acquired the TV, film and licensing rights to three popular children\u2019s books<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apartment-11-options-olga-childrens-book\/\">Apartment 11 Productions optioned the children\u2019s book <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apartment-11-options-olga-childrens-book\/\"><em>Olga<\/em><\/a>, written by Elise Gravel. 9 Story Media Group acquired a minority equity stake and entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/9-story-media-group-takes-stake-in-publishing-house\/\">first-look deal with the Knights Of publishing company<\/a>. And the independent children\u2019s book publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/albert-whitman-company-ventures-into-original-production\/\">Albert Whitman &amp; Company launched Albert Whitman Media<\/a> to develop and produce original media content based on the parent publishing company\u2019s popular titles.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just books and graphic novels serving as inspiration for new TV content. Disney Branded Television and Baobab Studios began developing <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/disney-branded-tv-partners-with-baobab-studios\/\"><em>The Witchverse<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/disney-branded-tv-partners-with-baobab-studios\/\">, a new animated anthology series based on the award-winning interactive experience Baba Yaga<\/a>. Cyber Group Studios is set to develop the new series <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cyber-group-studios-sets-precious-moments-series\/\"><em>Precious Moments<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cyber-group-studios-sets-precious-moments-series\/\">, based on the gift industry brand of the same name<\/a> and secured an exclusive option agreement with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cyber-group-adapting-final-fantasy-ix\/\">Square Enix to adapt <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cyber-group-adapting-final-fantasy-ix\/\"><em>Final Fantasy IX<\/em><\/a> into an animated series. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/9-story-to-develop-shows-with-the-nba\/\">9 Story Media Group entered into a development deal with THINK450<\/a>, the content and partnership arm of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), to bring NBA players into the kids\u2019 and family entertainment space. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apple-tv-orders-kids-series-inspired-by-dr-jane-goodall\/\">Apple TV+ went straight to series with <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/apple-tv-orders-kids-series-inspired-by-dr-jane-goodall\/\"><em>Jane<\/em><\/a>, a new mission-driven show for kids and families from J.J. Johnson, Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Jane Goodall Institute. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/warnermedia-greenlights-new-tom-and-jerry-series\/\">WarnerMedia Kids &amp; Family greenlit Tom and Jerry\u2019s first-ever preschool series<\/a> for its new <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cartoon-network-hbo-max-getting-preschool-programming-block\/\">Cartoonito block, which rolled out in September<\/a>(creating a raft of new opportunities for distributors). HBO Max and Cartoon Network also gave a straight-to-series order for <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/hbo-max-cartoon-network-greenlight-two-dc-series\/\"><em>Batman: Caped Crusader<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/hbo-max-cartoon-network-greenlight-two-dc-series\/\">and a two-season series order for <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/hbo-max-cartoon-network-greenlight-two-dc-series\/\"><em>My Adventures with Superman<\/em><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/genius-brands-marvel-enter-stan-lee-collaboration\/\">Marvel Studios licensed from Genius Brands International certain likeness rights to Stan Lee<\/a> in support of future marketing content celebrating the Marvel legacy. Genius Brands International also signed a partnership with Tankee to develop a new <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/roblox-series-landing-on-kartoon-channel\/\">Roblox-themed series that will air exclusively on Kartoon Channel!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Genius Brands International also had a busy year in the M&amp;A space, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/genius-brands-invests-in-germanys-yfe\/\">investing in Your Family Entertainment (YFE)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/genius-brands-acquires-michael-hirshs-wow-unlimited-media\/\">WOW! Unlimited Media, which owns Frederator Studios, Mainframe Studios and an extensive YouTube channel network<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/moonbug-sold-to-blackstone-backed-firm\/\">Moonbug Entertainment was bought<\/a> by the recently formed media company run by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. RTL Group reached a deal to buy out The Walt Disney Company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/rtl-group-takes-full-ownership-of-super-rtl\/\">50 percent shareholding in Super RTL<\/a>. Netflix acquired the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/netflix-acquires-roald-dahl-story-company\/\">Roald Dahl Story Company<\/a>. iGeneration Studios, a U.K.-based film and TV producer, acquired the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/igeneration-studios-komixx-entertainment-reorganize\/\">independent film and TV production company Komixx Entertainment Group<\/a>. KKR\u2019s Emerald Media sold its stake in the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cosmos-maya-acquired-by-newquest-capital-partners\/\">Asian animation studio Cosmos-Maya to NewQuest Capital Partners<\/a>. Sony Pictures Television sold its <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2021\/05\/14\/narrative-capital-acquires-spt-u-k-channels\/\">U.K. portfolio of kids\u2019 channels to Narrative Capital<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/banijay-buys-animation-studio-monello-productions\/\">Banijay acquired the animation company Monello Productions<\/a>. Gutsy Animations, which is behind the <em>Moominvalley<\/em> 3D animated series, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/gutsy-animations-secures-e5-million-investment-from-rovio\/\">secured an investment from Rovio Entertainment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The year also saw the launch of several new companies. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/cake-kickstart-tap-disney-alum-for-new-production-venture\/\">CAKE and Kickstart Entertainment launched CakeStart<\/a>, a full-service production company to develop and produce live-action projects. Exile Content Studio set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/exile-content-launches-kids-division-with-stephen-davis\/\">new division Exile Kids<\/a>, tapping Hasbro alum Stephen Davis as its chairman. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/doug-schwalbe-unveils-the-co-production-company\/\">Former DreamWorks Animation Television exec Doug Schwalbe launched The Co-Production Company<\/a>, focused on securing financing and distribution for high-end international productions. Italy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/red-monk-superprod-align-for-new-studio\/\">Red Monk Studio joined forces with Superprod Group<\/a> to create a new Milan-based animation studio.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to this year\u2019s trends, continued opportunities in the metaverse are expected to be key. The digital entertainment and media platform <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/wildbrains-teletubbies-joining-habbo-hotel-hideaway-metaverses\/\">Azerion welcomed WildBrain\u2019s <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/wildbrains-teletubbies-joining-habbo-hotel-hideaway-metaverses\/\"><em>Teletubbies<\/em><\/a> into the metaverses of the online Habbo and Hotel Hideaway games. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/toonz-media-group-ventures-into-nft-space\/\">Toonz Media Group is already working with the no-code NFT platform GuardianLink<\/a> to launch the first fully integrated NFT design lab.
