Launched this year, In Development KIDS was a dedicated strand for the children\u2019s content community at MIPTV. The track featured pitches for kids\u2019 live action and preschool animation, trends and insights, a co-production breakfast, masterclasses and sessions with leading kids\u2019 programmers. In association with the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, MIPTV also played host to the seventh annual International Emmy Kids Awards<\/a>, for which TV Kids<\/em> is a presenting partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a difficult world for children to grow up in, with an increasing list of social problems and enormous change,\u201d said International Academy President Bruce L. Paisner. \u201cThe winning programs help entertain, educate and prepare our children for the world they are about to face. This is an honorable task.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seven winners were announced from five different countries: the U.K.\u2019s Hey Duggee<\/em> for preschool, My Life: Born To Vlog<\/em> for factual and Ratburger<\/em> for TV movie\/miniseries; the Netherlands\u2019 Kop op<\/em> (Heads Together<\/em>)\u00a0for animation; Norway\u2019s Overgrep<\/em> (Sexual Abuse Awareness Week<\/em>) for digital; Sweden\u2019s Fixa Br\u00f6llopet<\/em> (Marrying Mum and Dad<\/em>) for non-scripted entertainment; and Brazil\u2019s Malha\u00e7\u00e3o: Viva a Diferen\u00e7a <\/em>(Young Hearts<\/em>) for best series.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the International Emmy Kids Awards, World Screen<\/em>\u2019s Anna Carugati presented the nominees at a session at In Development KIDS and talked trends with Serious Lunch CEO Genevieve Dexter<\/a>. Serious Lunch\u2019s catalog boasts previous International Emmy Kids Award winner\u00a0Ronja, the Robber\u2019s Daughter<\/em>\u00a0and nominee\u00a0Operation Ouch!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The streaming services have been \u201can absolute revolution, especially for producers that were not able to put co-productions together with multiple partners,\u201d Dexter said on shifts in the kids\u2019 landscape. \u201cSuddenly you could go to an international partner and have your project fully funded. Not only that\u2014they provide creative freedom to create things that weren\u2019t pigeonholed into a particular format. With every new medium, there is a huge feeding frenzy that happens. Although it has been a huge bonanza, as the streaming services become more demanding, they want to own the IP, so the deals are getting harder. So don\u2019t forget about the traditional models!\u201d<\/p>\n

Deal activity announced during the week included both traditional linear and digital players. 9 Story Distribution International secured a range of new international deals for the International Emmy Kids Award nominee Luo Bao Bei<\/em><\/a>, including a second window on Netflix. Cyber Group Studios signed a deal with Discovery Kids<\/a> in Latin America for its new animated series Sadie Sparks<\/em>. Atlantyca Entertainment licensed three seasons of the live-action teen drama series<\/a> Dance Academy<\/em> to Rai. Viacom International Studios\u2019 MIPTV sales activity<\/a> included TF1 taking the preschool show Abby Hatcher<\/em>. Konami Cross Media NY\u2019s Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS<\/em> secured slots on 9Go! in Australia, K2 in Italy and Teletoon in Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Partnerships remain key to the production and distribution of kids\u2019 content, with news last week of Cyber Group Studios and YoBoHo<\/a> joining forces to co-produce and distribute original content aimed at toddlers and preschoolers across digital and traditional media outlets; CAKE and TT Productions<\/a> teaming up on Treasure Trekkers<\/em>, and DQ Entertainment signing a co-production agreement with Red Square Media Group<\/a> for a new feature film and series.<\/p>\n
