{"id":12809,"date":"2017-08-18T12:18:54","date_gmt":"2017-08-18T16:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/golden-age-indian-animation\/"},"modified":"2017-08-21T09:18:12","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T13:18:12","slug":"the-golden-age-of-indian-animation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/the-golden-age-of-indian-animation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Golden Age of Indian Animation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Rajiv Chilaka, the CEO of Green Gold Animation, talks to <\/em>TV Kids<em> about the Indian animation studio, which he founded in 2001.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sixteen years ago, Rajiv Chilaka set out to establish an animation studio that he hoped would become known as \u201cthe Disney of India.\u201d Since then, Hyderabad-based Green Gold Animation has been creating original Indian animated content that has been broadcast on Cartoon Network, Pogo, Discovery Kids, Hungama and Disney Channel, and viewed by more than 60 million children around the globe. The company\u2019s properties have also enjoyed success in the film and L&amp;M arenas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/i7.cmail19.com\/ei\/r\/E1\/004\/CEC\/005914\/csimport\/2017-08-14-rajiv-chilaka_6.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"165\" height=\"218\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>\u201cIn 2001, [we] started\u00a0redefining the Indian animation industry with original IP shows that eventually made an indelible impression\u00a0on the hearts of young audiences,\u201d says Chilaka, Green Gold\u2019s founder and CEO. \u201cThe company has\u00a0grown by\u00a0leaps and bounds in its employee base, office expansion and its critical development of kids\u2019 IPs and shows. Green Gold has now also diversified into various domains such as branded stores, licensing and merchandising and digital media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green Gold\u2019s most popular property is the comedy adventure\u00a0<em>Chhota Bheem<\/em>, which was created by Chilaka. \u201cThe show has\u00a0tread an illustrious journey over the last ten seasons, transforming\u00a0into a household name,\u201d he says. \u201cKids have identified with Chhota Bheem,\u201d who Chilaka describes as being \u201cthe sparkling mascot of the Indian animation industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s first action\/adventure 3D series is\u00a0<em>Super Bheem<\/em>, a spin-off of\u00a0<em>Chhota Bheem<\/em>. The catalog also comprises the action\/adventure comedy\u00a0<em>Six Cylinder Samurai<\/em>\u00a0and the coming-of-age story\u00a0<em>Kalari Kids<\/em>. \u201cThe animation style of cartoons from India is reminiscent of the beauty, sophistication and stylization of the unique traditional art and paintings,\u201d says Chilaka.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe content developed in India has a touch of Indian culture with a global appeal. The same goes for the style of animation with shows produced by Green Gold, with each having its own distinct style in script and production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/i8.cmail19.com\/ei\/r\/E1\/004\/CEC\/005914\/csimport\/2017-08-14-i-am-no1_7.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"265\" height=\"196\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Green Gold is also working on the slapstick-style shorts\u00a0<em>Mighty Little Bheem<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>I Am No.1<\/em>. \u201cWe haven&#8217;t seen much slapstick since the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s, and that\u2019s why we are developing two pure slapstick shows,\u201d says Chilaka. \u201cBroadcasters look for simple but unique content and shows with heart\u2014stuff that kids can relate to in this day and age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Chilaka, the animation industry is \u201cseeing rapid growth and opportunity,\u201d but there are still some challenges at the moment, including limited government support, a lack of liberal policies and the need for more training institutions. \u201cThe\u00a0key issue is finding local talent in tandem with how much content is being produced,\u201d he says. \u201cTraditionally in India, animation was geared toward kids, but we are seeing an increase in content developed for older audiences, from teens to even adults.
