{"id":12634,"date":"2017-07-14T09:00:59","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T13:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/worldscreen.com\/"},"modified":"2017-07-17T09:32:37","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T13:32:37","slug":"spotlight-on-genius-brands-rainbow-rangers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/spotlight-on-genius-brands-rainbow-rangers\/","title":{"rendered":"A Colorful Start for Genius Brands&#8217; Rainbow Rangers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Stone Newman, the president of global consumer products, worldwide content sales and marketing at Genius Brands International, talks to <\/em>TV Kids<em> about\u00a0the new animated preschool series <\/em>Rainbow Rangers <em>and how it fills a need in programming for young girls.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last year, Genius Brands International offered up a tease of <em>Rainbow Rangers<\/em>, and since then, the mission-based action-adventure series for preschool girls has taken flight. The show comes from Rob Minkoff (<em>The Lion King<\/em>); Shane Morris, co-writer of <em>Frozen<\/em>; Ruben Aquino, designer for <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em> and <em>Beauty and the Beast<\/em>; and Emmy-nominated writer Elise Allen (<em>Dinosaur Train<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Lion Guard<\/em>, <em>Barbie <\/em>specials), who is serving as head writer and co-creator. It follows the adventures of seven magical girls from Kaleidoscopia, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvkids\/img\/2017-07-13-rainbow-rangers.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"275\" height=\"180\" \/>a fantastical land at the other end of the rainbow. The Rangers are protectors and defenders of the people, animals, resources and natural beauty of Earth, and whenever there\u2019s trouble, they ride a rainbow across the sky to save the day. Each girl represents a different color of the rainbow and boasts her own unique personality and power. Genius Brands\u2019 chairman and CEO, Andy Heyward, serves as executive producer on the series, which seeks to teach viewers the importance of working together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proudly unveiling <em>Rainbow Rangers<\/em>,\u201d says Stone Newman, the president of global consumer products, worldwide content sales and marketing at Genius Brands International. He explains that the company\u2019s strategy when creating new IP is to examine key play patterns and segments it can pursue. Newman says Genius Brands looks at \u201cwhat are the right consumer demographics, and what does Disney have or not have; and not only what don\u2019t they have, but what are they not actively pursuing or pushing? That space is where we try to live. We focus on original IPs that are areas of consumer interest that Disney doesn\u2019t play in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The concept for<em> Rainbow Rangers<\/em> came out of this strategy. Newman explains: \u201cDespite Disney having so much for preschool girls, the properties are all about the princess phenomenon and the princess fantasy, but then there are also shows about real-life aspiration with <em>Doc McStuffins<\/em> and <em>Sheriff Callie\u2019s Wild West<\/em>. So, what we saw in the marketplace consistently was how much <em>PAW Patrol<\/em> was over-indexing with girls, how much <em>The Octonauts<\/em> was over-indexing with girls. We addressed that by saying, There\u2019s a demand in the marketplace for a non-princess, non-traditional role-play series, and that\u2019s what <em>Rainbow Rangers<\/em> is. It is a mission-based action-adventure series for little girls. They are first responders, they are showing girls female empowerment and [how to] take charge and work as a team, and it\u2019s something very different from what is out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds, \u201cThat\u2019s why, from broadcasters like Nickelodeon and toy companies like Mattel, and apparel companies like Bentex and everyone else in the market that we\u2019ve shared it with, it\u2019s been received so extremely well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Nickelodeon has licensed exclusive broadcast rights for season one of the CGI-animated series in the U.S. and Caribbean Basin. It is expected to air on Nickelodeon\u2019s preschool channel, Nick Jr., next year.<\/p>\n<p>According to Newman, Genius Brands has also built \u201ca comprehensive U.S. licensing program already,\u201d with Mattel\u2019s Fisher-Price as global master toy partner for the brand. Additionally, The Bentex Group is on board for\u00a0<em>Rainbow Rangers<\/em>\u00a0apparel, while Jay Franco is working on bedding and home d\u00e9cor. H.E.R.
