Sesame Workshop has revealed that Sesame Place San Diego’s construction is near completion ahead of its planned March 2022 opening.

Through a partnership with SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Sesame Place San Diego will be the second Sesame Street theme park and the first on the West Coast. The 17-acre park will feature an interactive Sesame Street neighborhood complete with the 123 Stoop and a variety of themed rides.

Sesame Place San Diego, located within minutes of downtown San Diego, will be open year-round, with water attractions such as a 500,000-gallon wave pool offered in the summer. The park’s rides and attractions include Elmo’s Rockin’ Rockets, letting kids fly around in one of Elmo’s rocket ships; Cookie Climb, putting kids in a cloud of cookie crumbs as they pull themselves up Cookie Monster-themed towers; and Abby’s Fairy Flight, a family swing ride.

Kids and their families will also have the opportunity to interact with Sesame Street characters through live shows, a daily parade, photo opportunities and seasonal events and celebrations.

The park will open as a Certified Autism Center, as designated by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. Staff-wide autism sensitivity and awareness training will be completed and a park-specific sensory guide will be made available online. Designated quiet spaces have been incorporated into the park’s design.

“We’re thrilled with the progress of the much-anticipated Sesame Place San Diego, where families will experience a unique and powerful way to engage with their favorite characters and brand,” said Steve Youngwood, CEO of Sesame Workshop. “Those deep connections drive everything we do at Sesame Workshop and help deliver educational benefits to children around the world.”

“San Diego is a premier tourist destination, and Sesame Place is the perfect place for families looking to learn and play on the West Coast,” said Marc Swanson, CEO of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. “We’re excited that our Sesame Street friends are coming to San Diego and are eager to give locals a fun new experience, as well as provide tourists another great reason to visit San Diego.”
