Mattel Television and Nickelodeon have begun production on a live-action musical based on the Monster High franchise.

Under the working title Monster High, the film centers on Clawdeen Wolf, a half-human, half-werewolf teenager, who arrives at Monster High and quickly makes friends despite keeping her human half a secret. When a plan to destroy the school threatens to reveal her identity, Clawdeen must learn to embrace her true monster heart.

The musical, directed by Todd Holland (The Real O’Neals, Malcolm in the Middle, Firehouse Dog), is slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2022. The story is by Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series, Rugrats), Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog, Playmobil: The Movie), with the teleplay by Jaffe, Billy Eddy and Matt Eddy (Zapped, Teen Beach Movie).

In addition to the movie, an animated series based on the franchise is slated to premiere next year on Nickelodeon. Both are part of Mattel’s refueling of Monster High, which originally launched in 2010, to introduce it to a whole new generation.
