Just days after network fall schedules were unveiled at Upfront presentations being picketed by striking writers, the board of SAG-AFTRA, the actors\u2019 guild, unanimously agreed to recommend strike authorization to its members ahead of its negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). So things could go from bad to worse for networks and platforms relying on scripted dramas and comedies to lure audiences and advertisers. As such, the emphasis on reality across the U.S. networks\u2019 fall schedules is to be expected.<\/p>\n
After a reality-heavy summer with the returning\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0American Ninja Warrior<\/em>\u00a0and the brand-new\u00a0Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0LA Fire & Rescue<\/em>, NBC has a scripted dominant fall schedule with just\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Wall<\/em>\u00a0set for prime time. For midseason, however, there\u2019s a raft of non-scripted in the mix, including, from BBC Studios Natural History Unit in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio, the Tom Hanks-narrated\u00a0The Americas<\/em>. An untitled\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em>\u00a0extension is coming to NBC following the success of\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent: The Champions<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent: All-Stars<\/em>. The classic\u00a0Deal or No Deal\u00a0<\/em>is also back in a new iteration,\u00a0Deal or No Deal Island<\/em>.<\/p>\n FOX renewed an array of its reality offerings, including\u00a0Farmer Wants a Wife<\/em>\u00a0for a second season, along with\u00a0Hell’s Kitchen<\/em>,\u00a0I Can See Your Voice<\/em>,\u00a0LEGO Masters<\/em>,\u00a0The Masked Singer<\/em>,\u00a0Name That Tune<\/em>,\u00a0Next Level Chef<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test<\/em>. New for next season are the game shows\u00a0Snake Oil<\/em>, hosted and produced by David Spade and executive produced by Will Arnett through his Electric Avenue Productions; and\u00a0We Are Family<\/em>, hosted by Jamie Foxx and co-hosted by his daughter, producer and activist Corinne Foxx. The summer reality slate at FOX includes\u00a0Beat Shazam<\/em>,\u00a0Don\u2019t Forget the Lyrics!<\/em>,\u00a0Gordon Ramsay\u2019s Food Stars<\/em>,\u00a0MasterChef<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Crime Scene Kitchen<\/em>, all back for new seasons, plus the brand-new\u00a0Stars on Mars<\/em>, arriving in June.<\/p>\n Announcing its 2023-24 season, ABC said it was \u201cleaning into its incomparable unscripted slate.\u201d\u00a0Dancing with the Stars<\/em>\u00a0is back on the ABC grid after a season on Disney+; the flagship BBC Studios format will be the first series to broadcast live across multiple platforms on Monday nights. The network has again extended its successful\u00a0The Bachelor<\/em>\u00a0franchise, this time with\u00a0The Golden Bachelor<\/em>, featuring contestants in their 60s. It also has several returning game shows with\u00a0The $100,000 Pyramid<\/em>,\u00a0Celebrity Jeopardy!<\/em>,\u00a0Celebrity Wheel of Fortune<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Press Your Luck<\/em>.\u00a0Shark Tank<\/em>\u00a0will be back for a 15th season and\u00a0Judge Steve Harvey<\/em>\u00a0for a second. The upcoming ABC season will also include more\u00a0Bachelor in Paradise<\/em>\u00a0and the return of ABC News\u2019\u00a0What Would You Do?<\/em>, a hidden-camera format that ran for 15 seasons.<\/p>\n Like NBC, CBS opted for a scripted-heavy fall schedule while super-sizing two of its reality hits. On Wednesday nights, prime time will be taken up by\u00a0Survivor<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Amazing Race<\/em>, both expanding to 90-minute episodes.<\/p>\n The CW Network\u2019s upcoming grid relies heavily on scripted acquisitions, but some original non-scripted shows are in the mix, notably\u00a0FBoy Island<\/em>, which previously ran on HBO Max.
