With a looming writers\u2019 strike in the U.S. and broadcasters and platforms eager to deliver cost-effective programming amid financial concerns, the global formats business is gearing up for a potential new boom, borne out by the wealth of news that emerged from MIPTV and MIPFormats last week.<\/p>\n
Ahead of the market\u2019s official opening, ZDF Studios revealed it has teamed up with Tom Gamlich and Jan Fritzowsky to launch CONTENT LADEN, which will focus on the development and production of factual entertainment formats<\/a>. \u201cThe foundation of CONTENT LADEN is an investment in creativity and innovation,\u201d said Dr. Markus Sch\u00e4fer, president and CEO of ZDF Studios. \u201cWe want to create outstanding formats and, in doing so, achieve long-term, sustainable growth.\u201d<\/p>\n Ruth Berry, managing director of ITV Studios\u2019 global commercial division, used her Media Mastermind keynote on Tuesday to showcase some of the company\u2019s new offerings and highlight the strengths of its megaformat brands<\/a>, which include\u00a0Love Island<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Voice<\/em>. \u201cWhat\u2019s important about having these brands is they are sustainable and they keep growing and we can refresh them, grow them, expand them,\u201d Berry told delegates. \u201cWe\u2019re doing that. Some of the brands are evolving into new evolutions. They are also delivering year on year. Looking at how we extend those brands, how we reach into different audiences. We\u2019ve learned an enormous amount from\u00a0Love Island<\/em>. It sits largely in that 16-to-34 bracket. Where those audiences are finding their content is not through EPGs, it\u2019s through social media and other things. How we extend those brands into those mediums is really important. We\u2019ve created an experience for\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0in the metaverse. You\u2019ll see\u00a0Hell\u2019s Kitchen<\/em>\u00a0content going into the metaverse. We\u2019re starting to look at how those brands live and breathe beyond the TV screen.\u201d<\/p>\n And speaking of Love Island<\/em>, that buzzy hit was back in the news with Peacock unveiling a first-ever spin-off, Love Island Games<\/em><\/a>, <\/a>bringing together previous contestants from the U.S., U.K., Australia and beyond<\/a>.<\/p>\n The market last week featured a case study on one of the landscape\u2019s newest megaformats, with the team behind All3Media International\u2019s The Traitors<\/em>discussing what has turned that property into one of the best-selling brands today. The company announced last week six new deals on idtv\u2019s \u201cintelligent reality\u201d show, taking the total number of local versions to 20<\/a>. \u201cidtv\u2019s highly adaptable format has not only notched up an impressive number of international versions in just two years, it has also succeeded in truly capturing the public\u2019s attention wherever it airs, leading to most broadcasters already commissioning second seasons,\u201d said Nick Smith, executive VP of formats at All3Media International. \u201cMany viewers are looking for more depth and substance in their reality shows, and The Traitors<\/em> really taps into that \u2018intelligent reality\u2019 trend, delivering an addictive game of deception, skill and trust that keeps the audience guessing until the very last episode.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the brand-new Belgian adventure reality competition format Destination X<\/em>, showcased in a large bus outside the Palais, notched up a co-commission with the BBC and NBCUniversal following its success on VTM in Belgium<\/a>. Kate Phillips, director of unscripted at the BBC, noted: \u201cFollowing the must-see success of\u00a0The Traitors<\/em>, I\u2019m delighted that once again we\u2019re partnering with NBCUniversal on another very smart, very addictive and very innovative competition show. It promises to be a hugely challenging adventure for our ten brave contestants, with plenty of play-along for all BBC viewers, as everyone hopes they\u2019ve got the X that marks the spot!\u201d<\/p>\n FOX Alternative Entertainment (FAE) has high hopes for the two new series unveiled last week created under its <\/a>International Unscripted Format Fund<\/a>: Beat My Mini-Mes<\/em> (w.t.) for France\u2019s TF1 and Marriage Market<\/em> (w.t.) for Germany\u2019s ProSieben. \u201cWe specifically designed this Format Fund to partner with international buyers to identify, develop and introduce new programs that expand FAE\u2019s slate of owned content and, in success, serve as a platform for future success on FOX in the U.S.,\u201d said Allison Wallach, president of unscripted programming at FOX Entertainment. \u201cIn\u00a0Beat My Mini-Mes<\/em>\u00a0and TF1, and\u00a0Marriage Market<\/em>\u00a0and ProSieben, we have the perfect combination of what we\u2019re striving for with this initiative\u2014unique formats with unlimited potential on a global scale and great partners with an impressive track record of innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n FAE also served as a partner on the MIPFormats Pitch, which was won by <\/a>Show Must Go On<\/em><\/a>. The Turkish company formatworkshop was presented with a prize of $5,000 for development and has the opportunity for\u00a0Show Must Go On<\/em>\u00a0to be pitched to global buyers as part of FOX\u2019s $100 million International Unscripted Format Fund.<\/p>\n Last week also saw Japan\u2019s Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) host an independent format pitch event, THE TALK OF TOKYO, showcasing three new properties<\/a> it believes have international potential. Orange Smarty arrived at MIPTV with three new formats<\/a>, including the BBC One show Scarlett\u2019s Driving School<\/em>.
