And even as those platforms go through strategy shifts amid slowing subscriber gains, the demand for high-concept ideas that will deliver audiences and be easily replicable as services look to drive local gains in key markets remains intact.<\/p>\n<p>Of note, Netflix added to its roster for 2023 the all-new <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-sets-unscripted-survival-competition-series\/\">unscripted survival competition series <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-sets-unscripted-survival-competition-series\/\"><em>Outlast<\/em><\/a> from Aggregate Films and Nomad Entertainment, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/reality-competition-the-mole-set-for-netflix\/\">announced a reboot of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/reality-competition-the-mole-set-for-netflix\/\"><em>The Mole<\/em><\/a>, greenlit <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-sets-squid-game-competition-series\/\"><em>Squid Game: The Challenge<\/em><\/a>\u2014billing it as &#8220;the biggest reality competition series ever&#8221;\u2014rolled out a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-sets-love-is-blind-japan-premiere\/\">Japanese edition of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-sets-love-is-blind-japan-premiere\/\"><em>Love is Blind<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-reboots-iron-chef\/\">commissioned <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/netflix-reboots-iron-chef\/\"><em>Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend<\/em><\/a>, a supersized approach to the original culinary competition, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/studio-lambert-raw-tv-partner-for-edge-of-paradise\/\">reality competition show <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/studio-lambert-raw-tv-partner-for-edge-of-paradise\/\"><em>Edge of Paradise<\/em><\/a>, from All3Media\u2019s Studio Lambert and Raw TV. Paramount+ greenlit a global all-stars edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/paramount-sets-global-edition-for-drag-race-franchise\/\"><em>Drag Race<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/paramount-sets-global-edition-for-drag-race-franchise\/\"> franchise<\/a> and an international edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/are-you-the-one-getting-a-global-treatment\/\">dating competition series <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/are-you-the-one-getting-a-global-treatment\/\"><em>Are You the One?<\/em><\/a> Prime Video slated new concepts, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/prime-video-greenlights-date-night\/\">including a dating reality show for the U.K. and Ireland<\/a>, and commissioned new versions of returning formats, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-bridge-to-see-four-more-adaptations\/\">among them <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-bridge-to-see-four-more-adaptations\/\"><em>The Bridge<\/em><\/a> across Europe and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-great-bake-off-being-adapted-in-japan\/\"><em>The Great Bake Off<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-great-bake-off-being-adapted-in-japan\/\"> in Japan<\/a>. Stan in Australia slated and then promptly renewed <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/new-format-from-married-at-first-sight-producers\/\"><em>Love Triangle<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/new-format-from-married-at-first-sight-producers\/\"> from the minds behind the Australian version of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/new-format-from-married-at-first-sight-producers\/\"><em>Married at First Sight<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/peacock-picks-up-u-s-adaptation-of-the-traitors\/\">Peacock landed <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/peacock-picks-up-u-s-adaptation-of-the-traitors\/\"><em>The Traitors<\/em><\/a>, All3Media International\u2019s high-concept reality competition, and became the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/love-island-moves-to-peacock-in-the-u-s\/\">new U.S. home of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/love-island-moves-to-peacock-in-the-u-s\/\"><em>Love Island<\/em><\/a>. The dating megaformat was also acquired by <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/love-island-adaptation-for-israeli-streamer\/\">Free TV, a new streaming service in Israel<\/a>. Image Nation Abu Dhabi secured the rights to NBCUniversal Formats\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/million-dollar-listing-set-for-uae-version-on-starzplay\/\"><em>Million Dollar Listing<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/million-dollar-listing-set-for-uae-version-on-starzplay\/\"> for STARZPLAY<\/a> in the UAE. Viaplay brought the reality format <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/viaplay-commissions-celebrity-masterchef\/\"><em>Celebrity MasterChef<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/viaplay-commissions-celebrity-masterchef\/\"> to the Netherlands for the first time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the megaformats\u2014and their various spin-offs and franchise extensions\u2014remain sought after by linear and streaming platforms alike. <em>Big Brother <\/em>sealed <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/big-brother-set-for-u-k-return-on-itv\/\">a deal for a return to the U.K.<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/new-big-brother-iteration\/\">new iteration in the Republic of Kosovo<\/a>. The aforementioned <em>Love Island<\/em> landed in <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/love-island-heads-to-albania-malta\/\">Albania and Malta for the first time<\/a>, was <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/love-island-lands-greek-adaptation\/\">commissioned in Greece<\/a> and scored a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/two-new-seasons-of-love-island-set-for-2023\/\">two-season order for this year in the U.K<\/a>. <em>Survivor<\/em>, which marked its <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/survivor-celebrates-25th-anniversary\/\">landmark 25<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/survivor-celebrates-25th-anniversary\/\">th anniversary in 2022<\/a>, scored an agreement to return to <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/survivor-returns-to-colombia\/\">Colombia after a 15-year absence<\/a> and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/survivor-returning-to-the-u-k\/\">U.K. after a 20-year gap<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/banijay-rights-inks-deals-for-survivor-in-cee\/\">new deals in CEE<\/a>. Another Banijay Rights megafranchise, <em>MasterChef<\/em>, also had a strong showing in 2022, including <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/new-iteration-in-masterchef-franchise\/\">a version for contestants 60-plus in Brazil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/10-orders-masterchef-dessert-masters-location-location-location\/\"><em>MasterChef: Dessert Masters<\/em><\/a> securing an order in Australia, FOX <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/fox-renews-masterchef-for-13th-season\/\">renewing the show in the U.S.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/bbc-secures-six-year-deal-for-masterchef\/\">a new long-term deal with the BBC in the U.K.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/masterchef-to-return-in-france\/\">a slot on France 2<\/a> and <em>MasterChef: Young Talent<\/em> landing on <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/viaplay-group-commissions-local-iterations-of-masterchef-young-talent\/\">Viaplay in Denmark and Norway<\/a>. Simon Cowell&#8217;s Syco Entertainment secured a groundbreaking $125 million securitization deal for the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/syco-in-125-million-securitization-deal-for-got-talent-ip\/\"><em>Got Talent<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/syco-in-125-million-securitization-deal-for-got-talent-ip\/\"> IP with investment bank ACF<\/a> as that format continued to gain traction in 2022. ITV commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/magicians-spin-off-for-britains-got-talent\/\"><em>Britain\u2019s Got Talent: The Ultimate Magician<\/em><\/a>, a one-off that brings together magicians from past seasons for a competition, while <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/nbc-greenlights-americas-got-talent-all-stars\/\">NBC greenlit <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/nbc-greenlights-americas-got-talent-all-stars\/\"><em>America\u2019s Got Talent: All-Stars<\/em><\/a>. A brand-new adaptation was also <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/got-talent-heads-to-japan\/\">ordered in Japan<\/a>. BBC Studios signed deals for <em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/dancing-with-the-stars-to-debut-in-latvia\/\">Latvia and Estonia<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/indian-dancing-with-the-stars-returning-to-colors\/\">India, with the brand returning to COLORS<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-voice-generations-lands-portuguese-adaptation\/\"><em>The Voice Generations<\/em><\/a>, a spin-off of the talent competition, was ordered in Portugal, while another extension <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-voice-kids-headed-to-malta\/\">landed in Malta<\/a>. <em>LEGO Masters<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/fox-slates-farmer-wants-a-wife-lego-masters-season-4\/\">renewed in the U.S.<\/a> and landed a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/koreas-lego-masters-gears-up-for-mbc-launch\/\">new version in South Korea<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/old-peoples-home-for-teenagers-bowing-on-abc-tv\/\"><em>Old People\u2019s Home for Teenagers<\/em><\/a>, a spin-off of <em>Old People\u2019s Home for 4 Year Olds<\/em>, launched in Australia. Other returning formats that demonstrated their resilience in 2022 included <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/fremantle-takes-farming-for-love-to-ctv\/\"><em>The Farmer Wants a Wife<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/power-couple-scores-new-deals-in-europe\/\"><em>Power Couple<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/my-kitchen-rules-returning-in-new-zealand\/\"><em>My Kitchen Rules<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/channel-4-renews-come-dine-with-me-the-professionals\/\"><em>Come Dine with Me<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/chwarel-cwmni-da-to-produce-welsh-gogglebox\/\"><em>Gogglebox<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/hells-kitchen-heads-to-thailand\/\"><em>Hell&#8217;s Kitchen<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/top-chef-being-adapted-in-thailand\/\"><em>Top Chef<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-real-housewives-franchise-extended-to-cape-town\/\"><em>The Real Housewives<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/im-a-celebrityget-me-out-of-here-heads-to-two-new-markets\/\"><em>I&#8217;m a Celebrity\u2026Get Me Out of Here!<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-bachelor-returns-with-new-name-in-australia\/\"><em>The Bachelor<\/em><\/a> and <em>Star Academy<\/em>, which sealed an agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/star-academy-returning-to-tf1\/\">to return to France<\/a>. There were also several other reboots in 2022, including <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-mole-to-return-to-italy\/\"><em>The Mole<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-mole-to-return-to-italy\/\"> returning to Italy<\/a>, a new version of <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/fear-factor-returning-in-belgium\/\"><em>Fear Factor<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/fear-factor-returning-in-belgium\/\"> in Belgium<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/this-is-your-life-returns-to-australia\/\"><em>This is Your Life<\/em><\/a> coming back in Australia and CBS setting <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/cbs-revives-lingo\/\">a new edition of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/cbs-revives-lingo\/\"><em>Lingo<\/em><\/a> with RuPaul Charles.<\/p>\n<p>The other big trend in the formats business last year was the strong demand for scripted concepts, with producers, broadcasters and platforms eager to source compelling drama and comedy ideas with the added advantage of limited development spend. Dick Wolf&#8217;s Wolf Entertainment, behind successful franchises such as <em>Law &amp; Order<\/em> and <em>FBI<\/em>, aligned with <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/wolf-entertainment-launching-format-sales\/\">Universal Studio Group to create a new sales venture focusing on international format distribution<\/a>. <em>Call My Agent!<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/sk-global-miles-films-team-for-call-my-agent-adaptation\/\">scored a deal in Indonesia<\/a>, as did <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/doctor-foster-to-be-adapted-in-indonesia\/\"><em>Doctor Foster<\/em><\/a>. All3Media International landed Astro for a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/malaysias-astro-to-adapt-liar\/\">Malaysian version of the Two Brothers Pictures drama <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/malaysias-astro-to-adapt-liar\/\"><em>Liar<\/em><\/a>. Tomorrow Studios optioned <em>CONNECTED: The Homebound Detective<\/em>, the Japanese crime drama format from Envision Entertainment and Nippon TV, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/nippon-tv-envisions-connected-lands-u-s-option\/\">for a U.S. adaptation<\/a>. <em>Jane the Virgin<\/em> is being <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/jane-the-virgin-set-for-south-african-remake\/\">remade for South Africa<\/a>. Dori Media Group inked a deal with Abu Dhabi Media for an <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/in-treatment-getting-arabic-version\/\">Arabic version of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/in-treatment-getting-arabic-version\/\"><em>In Treatment<\/em><\/a>, while BBC Studios secured MBC Group for the first Arabic-language adaptation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/doctor-foster-getting-arabic-language-adaptation\/\">drama <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/doctor-foster-getting-arabic-language-adaptation\/\"><em>Doctor Foster<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/doctor-foster-being-adapted-in-thailand\/\">also headed to Thailand<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-office-gets-arabic-language-treatment\/\">a local edition of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/the-office-gets-arabic-language-treatment\/\"><em>The Office<\/em><\/a>. MBC also launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/shahid-launches-remake-of-the-killing\/\">local version of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/shahid-launches-remake-of-the-killing\/\"><em>The Killing<\/em><\/a>. Universal Television\u2019s <em>New Amsterdam<\/em> got its first <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/new-amsterdam-being-adapted-in-turkey\/\">international version in Turkey<\/a>, where BBC Studios\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/happy-valley-getting-local-treatment-in-turkey\/\"><em>Happy Valley<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/happy-valley-getting-local-treatment-in-turkey\/\"> also landed a remake deal<\/a>. The Ukrainian comedy <em>Servant of the People<\/em>, which launched the political career of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/servant-of-the-people-gets-polish-remake\/\">scored an agreement to be remade in Poland for Polsat<\/a>. Georgian Public Broadcaster ordered an adaptation of the Armoza Formats <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/armoza-formats-scores-la-famiglia-adaptation-in-georgia\/\">scripted comedy format <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/armoza-formats-scores-la-famiglia-adaptation-in-georgia\/\"><em>La Famiglia<\/em><\/a>, which also landed <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/la-famiglia-to-land-in-hungary\/\">a deal in Hungary<\/a>. Eccho Rights licensed the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/romanian-adaptation-for-turkish-drama-insider\/\">Turkish drama <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/romanian-adaptation-for-turkish-drama-insider\/\"><em>Insider <\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/romanian-adaptation-for-turkish-drama-insider\/\">to Romania\u2019s PRO TV<\/a>. India was a hub for scripted format activity, with deals for All3Media International\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/zee5-debuts-indian-adaptation-of-cheat\/\"><em>Cheat<\/em><\/a>, the Korean series <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/studio-dragons-flower-of-evil-scores-indian-adaptation\/\"><em>Flower of Evil<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/vertige-set-for-indian-adaptation\/\">Armoza Formats\u2019 Canadian miniseries <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/vertige-set-for-indian-adaptation\/\"><em>Vertige<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/bbc-studios-press-set-for-indian-adaptation\/\">BBC Studios\u2019 <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/bbc-studios-press-set-for-indian-adaptation\/\"><em>Press<\/em><\/a>, among others. Endemol Shine North America said it was developing an English-language version of the Swedish drama <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/joe-berlinger-preps-adaptation-of-the-truth-will-out\/\"><em>The Truth Will Out<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/joe-berlinger-preps-adaptation-of-the-truth-will-out\/\"> with Joe Berlinger<\/a>.
