Nick Smith, the executive VP of formats at All3Media International, weighs in on what’s trending in the format marketplace.<\/em><\/p>\n

All3Media International\u2019s format business has been resilient throughout the pandemic, with a sustained appetite from broadcasters and audiences around the world for new locally produced programming. \u201cWe\u2019ve been lucky to have formats such as <\/span>Celebrity Call Centre<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Cube<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Gogglebox<\/span><\/i>, which can be produced in Covid-19-secure environments, and have also received multiple commissions for the formats <\/span>Snackmasters<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Dog House<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Sort Your Life Out<\/span><\/i>,\u201d says Nick Smith, the company\u2019s executive VP of formats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Buyers, he says, are looking for \u201cpositive, feel-good programming,\u201d which bodes well for All3Media International\u2019s titles such as <\/span>Sort Your Life Out<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Dog House <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>10 Years Younger in 10 Days<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is more focus on \u2018intelligent reality\u2019 titles, which our new format <\/span>The Traitors<\/span><\/i> offers,\u201d Smith adds. \u201cThe series was a smash hit in the Netherlands, and several respondents described it as \u2018intelligent reality.\u2019 They found it gripping like a typical reality show but didn\u2019t experience any guilt when watching.\u201d Deals on the show are set to be announced in due course.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company is negotiating new agreements for formats such as <\/span>Race Across the World<\/span><\/i>, as broadcasters are looking to the future. \u201cThere is a huge desire for travel series at the moment, so it has been great to see producers able to adapt titles such as <\/span>Travel Guides<\/span><\/i>, which has continued production in New Zealand and Australia through a focus on local holiday destinations,\u201d says Smith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also notes a significant resurgence in game shows as of late. The lighthearted quiz-show format <\/span>Cash at Your Door<\/span><\/i> has been acquired by NBCUniversal in the U.S., and the tense prime-time game show <\/span>The Cube<\/span><\/i> was recently adapted for TBS in the U.S. All3Media International has also notched up sales for <\/span>Are You Normal?<\/span><\/i> in Spain and for <\/span>Lingo<\/span><\/i> in the U.K. and Italy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So-called \u201cloud formats\u201d such as <\/span>Naked Attraction<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Who Bares Wins<\/span><\/i> have also garnered solid attention from audiences and sold across numerous territories as both tapes and formats, according to Smith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All3Media International has seen demand for both fresh concepts and classics. The reality series <\/span>Undercover Boss<\/span><\/i> recently made a comeback in the U.K. as <\/span>Undercover Big Boss<\/span><\/i>, which follows a new group of chief execs and company bosses as they go in disguise to work on their very own shop floors. \u201cWe are also pleased to see the format is continuing to sell successfully internationally,\u201d says Smith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are currently seeing less of a need for daytime from formats and more need for prime and access prime,\u201d adds Smith, as he keeps his finger on the pulse of what\u2019s trending in the format landscape. <\/span><\/p>\n
