A look at the format highlights to come out of this year\u2019s MIPCOM.<\/em><\/p>\n

While buyers\u2019 predilection for high-quality drama remains pervasive, there was still plenty of action in the unscripted format arena at MIPCOM. Game shows, for one, seemed to stir up a fair bit of buzz at the market. Just ahead of the event\u2019s official kick-off, FremantleMedia announced it was\u00a0bringing back the classic shopping game show\u00a0Supermarket Sweep<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, while Endemol Shine Group revealed that it secured\u00a0the rights to take FOX\u2019s interactive music game show\u00a0Beat Shazam\u00a0<\/em>global<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Inter Medya, which has established itself as a strong player in selling Turkish dramas, was at MIPCOM with\u00a0a diversified slate that included the quiz show\u00a0Money Monster<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. Global Agency, another power player in the Turkish drama space, made headlines at the market by\u00a0giving away a cash prize of \u20ac10,000<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to the winner of the game\u00a0In and Out<\/em>, one of the company\u2019s key MIPCOM launches.<\/p>\n

Armoza Formats\u00a0sold its game-show format\u00a0Upgrade<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to Italy\u2019s Mediaset, along with the factual-entertainment show\u00a0The Package<\/em>. The company saw continued momentum for\u00a0The Final Four<\/em>, which it launched at MIPTV. New deals were notched up for the prime-time singing competition\u00a0in New Zealand and pan-Asia<\/a><\/strong>, as well as\u00a0in Finland<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another format genre that saw some solid traction at the market was reality. Red Arrow International clinched a number of deals across the globe for its\u00a0new reality format\u00a0Buying Blind<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. Armoza\u00a0landed its first sale<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on the new docu-reality show\u00a0Back to Life<\/em>. MGM Worldwide Television Distribution did\u00a0a deal to co-produce and distribute<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0the new docu-reality format\u00a0Married 10<\/em>. Passion Distribution and Bomanbridge Media\u00a0signed on to distribute\u00a0Gamerz<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which promises a fresh twist on reality formats with its incorporation of live eSports.<\/p>\n

Factual entertainment proved popular for FremantleMedia,\u00a0with the sale of its new format\u00a0The Recording Studio<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which recently received a BBC One pilot commission, to DR in Denmark. The company also revealed\u00a0a new partnership with Kapow<\/a><\/strong>, which will gain exclusive production rights to and represent FremantleMedia\u2019s catalog of entertainment formats in Argentina. Meanwhile, The Story Lab and youngest Media announced they are partnering up for the\u00a0production of digital-first entertainment formats<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Of course, with the appetite for drama still riding high, scripted formats were in demand at the market. Nippon TV\u2019s hit Japanese drama\u00a0Mother\u00a0<\/em>landed the company\u00a0its first scripted remake deal with Korea\u2019s CJ E&M<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cHaving announced last year our deal for the Turkish format of\u00a0Mother<\/em>\u00a0(Anne<\/em>), which has been a ratings success in Turkey, it is an honor to be unveiling our new venture with CJ E&M for the Korean version of\u00a0Mother<\/em>,\u201d said Atsushi Hatayama, the president of international business development for Nippon TV, in announcing the new adaptation.<\/p>\n

BBC Worldwide scored its\u00a0first licensing agreement for the scripted format\u00a0The Last Hours of Laura K<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which has multiplatform elements, signing up Rede Globo for a Brazilian adaptation. And the family drama\u00a0Step Dave\u00a0<\/em>is getting a Hungarian treatment<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from TV2, thanks to a deal with all3media international.<\/p>\n

From game shows to factual entertainment and reality, prime-time competitions to scripted fare, the formats that made headlines during MIPCOM showed that there is no one \u201cbig thing\u201d dominating the space at the moment.\u00a0TV Formats Weekly\u00a0<\/em>will be keeping a close eye on all the genres making noise in the marketplace as we track the latest trends to emerge in the months ahead of MIPTV and MIPFormats.<\/p>\n
