The original idea came from Little Hill, a production company founded by Norwegian music producer J\u00f8rn Dahl, and was developed by Monster<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/i6.cmail20.com\/ei\/r\/56\/6E9\/4EC\/022803\/csimport\/2016-11-14-espen-huseby_5.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"160\" height=\"215\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Format for broadcast on TV2 in Norway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years in the business, nobody knows better than J\u00f8rn how digital has disrupted the music industry, particularly in terms of discovering talent,\u201d says Espen Huseby, the CEO of Nordic World. \u201cIn today\u2019s world, it\u2019s no longer A&amp;R executives and record labels that decide who\u2019s going to be a star, but the public. Look at Justin Bieber and Adele\u2014arguably two of the biggest music stars on the planet\u2014they were both discovered online.\u00a0<em>The Stream<\/em>\u00a0simply reflects the music industry\u2019s new reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Stream<\/em>\u00a0is currently airing in Norway, where \u201cthe numbers have been very encouraging,\u201d says Huseby. \u201cIt\u2019s been pulling in an average share of more than 30 percent in the 20 to 49 demo.\u201d Finland was the first country to pick up\u00a0<em>The Stream<\/em>. The format has also been licensed in Belgium, as well as in the U.S., where it will broadcast on NBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA U.S. deal is still the Holy Grail for any format,\u201d says Huseby. \u201cIt\u2019s the biggest, most important market in the world, and nothing beats the global profile that comes with delivering a U.S. hit.\u201d In addition to adapting\u00a0<em>The Stream<\/em>\u00a0for the U.S.,\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/i7.cmail20.com\/ei\/r\/56\/6E9\/4EC\/022803\/csimport\/2016-11-14-the-stream-in-norway_6.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"260\" height=\"193\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Huseby says that NBCUniversal will distribute the format internationally outside of the Nordic territories and Belgium, which Nordic World will continue to represent.<\/p>\n<p>According to Huseby, there are two central pillars that should remain at the core of local treatments of\u00a0<em>The Stream<\/em>: the contestants being invited to stream videos, and the audience having control over the talent selection and outcome. \u201cThe basic premise of<em>The Stream<\/em>\u00a0is that hopefuls upload video clips of themselves to the show\u2019s website, where they can be viewed by the public,\u201d he says. \u201cThe audience can comment on, share and stream the videos, with the most-streamed 100 contenders then asked to perform a showcase in front of top music-industry scouts. The record executives pick 40 artists, with whom they work closely for one week. At the end of that time, they sign their three favorite acts, which go on to compete in a weekly live show. Meanwhile, their music is also available on Spotify. The winner is the artist who generates the most streams, as well as the most votes during the live show. So it really is the audience who holds the power, and that, for me, is a non-negotiable element of the format.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Huseby is confident that the original version of\u00a0<em>The Stream\u00a0<\/em>will be renewed for a second season on Norway\u2019s TV2. He also foresees international sales of the U.S. treatment. \u201cThe world is always interested in American talent, as the buoyant exports of many ready-made U.S. talent formats demonstrate,\u201d he says. \u201cAfter all the great publicity [we\u2019ve had] on the back the NBCUniversal deal, we\u2019ve had enquires from just about every major territory.
