It joins a raft of original factual and fact-ent programming that includes\u00a0<em>Bangers &amp; Cash<\/em>, among others. Helen Nightingale, head of factual and factual entertainment, talks to\u00a0<em>TV Formats <\/em>about the commissioning strategy across the UKTV bouquet for those genres and what the team is currently on the lookout for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvformats\/img\/2023-12-08-Helen-Nightingale.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"153\" height=\"197\" \/><strong>TV FORMATS:\u00a0<\/strong>What\u2019s guiding UKTV\u2019s factual and fact-ent strategy at present?<br \/>\n<strong>NIGHTINGALE:<\/strong>\u00a0We\u2019re a broad entertainment network and commission for Dave, W, Yesterday and Gold. We\u2019re always looking for noisy, funny factual and fact-ent formats. On Dave, we have the second season of the new\u00a0<em>World\u2019s Most Dangerous Roads<\/em>\u00a0coming soon, which has a great roster of funny talent embarking on a dangerous trip of a lifetime. On W, we have continuing programs like\u00a0<em>Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over<\/em>, and this year, we\u2019ve had great success with\u00a0<em>Gemma &amp; Gorka: Life Behind the Lens<\/em>, which aired in the summer. We\u2019re also stepping into the true-crime space for the first time on W with\u00a0<em>Red Flag<\/em>. On Yesterday, we focus on passionate experts and have enjoyed success with precinct-based factual with great characters, e.g.,\u00a0<em>Hornby: A Model World\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Bangers &amp; Cash.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>TV FORMATS:\u00a0<\/strong>What led to the decision to bring back\u00a0<em>Find It, Fix It, Flog It<\/em>?<br \/>\n<strong>NIGHTINGALE:<\/strong>\u00a0When Yesterday channel director Gerald Casey spotted the article in\u00a0<em>Broadcast\u00a0<\/em>announcing that Channel 4 wouldn\u2019t be recommissioning\u00a0<em>Find It, Fix It, Flog It<\/em>, he told me, and I immediately contacted the producers to ask whether they would want to bring the show to Yesterday. We love [presenters] Henry [Cole] and Simon [O\u2019Brien], and this kind of content feels very Yesterday while also broadening our offering for the audience. We did the same with\u00a0<em>Canal Boat Diaries<\/em>\u00a0recently from BBC Four, and we know our audience is enjoying this content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV FORMATS:\u00a0<\/strong>Tell me about some of the other original format commissions that have come through recently.<br \/>\n<strong>NIGHTINGALE:<\/strong>\u00a0On W, we have upcoming the Katherine Ryan-fronted format\u00a0<em>Parental Guidance<\/em>, which will see Katherine explore a whole host of extreme parenting techniques and evaluate whether they might benefit her own family life. Katherine\u2019s hilarious, unfiltered take on these different parenting styles will be complemented by special access to Katherine\u2019s family life and give W viewers a new insight into how she juggles parenthood with the glamorous lifestyle of being a top comedian. On Yesterday, we have a new car-renovation precinct,\u00a0<em>Classic Car Hunters\u00a0<\/em>(w.t.), which follows the work of mechanic Sheldon Nichols and bodywork specialist Peter Harriott as they source, restore and upgrade classic cars. We know Yesterday viewers will love this format and enjoy Sheldon and Peter\u2019s insights from their decades of experience and their great dynamic on screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV FORMATS:\u00a0<\/strong>What are you currently on the lookout for now?<br \/>\n<strong>NIGHTINGALE:<\/strong>\u00a0We are always looking for great talent-led factual and factual entertainment series that don\u2019t feel derivative. In particular, talent exploring and following their passion projects and going on authentic journeys works for us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TV FORMATS:\u00a0<\/strong>As you look across the wider U.K. landscape, what are the types of factual and factual entertainment formats that are working best nowadays?<br \/>\n<strong>NIGHTINGALE:<\/strong>\u00a0As a viewer, I really loved\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>, and I\u2019m also looking forward to sitting down with my family over the Christmas break and binging\u00a0<em>Squid Game: The Challenge<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s fascinating to see how a scripted show can be reimagined as an entertainment format.
