Jan Rudovsk\u00fd, the head of acquisitions at the Czech broadcaster FTV Prima, told World Screen Newsflash <\/em>that factual programming and independent movies are two areas of interest as he meets with distributors at NATPE Budapest.<\/p>\n

Prima is currently the number two commercial channel in the Czech Republic, regularly securing a 20 to 25 percent market share overall. Rather than working to maintain that positioning, \u201cwe want to increase it,\u201d Rudovsk\u00fd said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been doing that for some time now,\u201d mainly through ramping up original productions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were to look at Prima\u2019s schedule five years ago, you would see it was U.S. shows, [foreign] acquisitions and some original shows thrown in for good measure. When you look at Prima\u2019s schedule now, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. it\u2019s almost only original production.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are five channels within the FTV Prima bouquet. Alongside the flagship general-audience Prima, there is Prima COOL. This \u201cedgy\u201d male-skewed channel has \u201cgreat brand awareness,\u201d Rudovsk\u00fd said. \u201cThe cool shows are on Prima COOL\u2014The Simpsons<\/em>, The Big Bang Theory<\/em>, Top Gear<\/em>, The Walking Dead<\/em>, Dexter<\/em>, you name it!\u201d Prima ZOOM is a free-to-air factual channel, while Prima MAX is dedicated to movies. Prima LOVE is a slightly more female-skewing channel, featuring a mix a romance, soft crime and reality fare.<\/p>\n

On the main Prima channel, prime time is mostly originals, but daytime and late night are still largely acquisitions. Rudovsk\u00fd points to titles such as the British series Midsomer Murders<\/em>, the French police drama Julie Lescaut<\/em> and the U.S. classic M*A*S*H<\/em> as the type of \u201ceasy-to-watch\u201d shows Prima\u2019s viewers enjoy. On the smaller channels, around 95 percent of the schedules are acquisitions, including U.S. imports and European series, both factual and scripted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we do format licensing, it\u2019s mainly for entertainment shows,\u201d Rudovsk\u00fd shared. \u201cWe\u2019ve done a number of seasons of Got Talent<\/em>. We are in season 14 of Come Dine with Me<\/em> and season seven of Kitchen Nightmares<\/em>. Last summer we launched a Czech version of Fort Boyard<\/em> to huge success. It was surprising because it got a younger audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of scripted formats, last year we did an adaptation of The Last Cop<\/em>, which we are bringing back for a second season,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhen it comes to scripted, most of it is homegrown. We find that it resonates more with the viewers if it\u2019s locally grown instead of a remake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rudovsk\u00fd pointed to crime as a genre that performs well for Prima. \u201cWe have established a Sunday prime-time crime slot, where we put one to two new original production crime shows every season. The thing that we need more of is good crime procedurals, the stuff that the U.S. studios used to put out years ago\u2014the CSI<\/em>s, Castle<\/em>s, The Mentalist<\/em>s. It\u2019s really short in supply now, so that\u2019s what we would really like more of.\u201d<\/p>\n

At NATPE Budapest this week, Rudovsk\u00fd said he is \u201clooking to meet with people from the region,\u201d with an eye on factual content and some independent movies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
