{"id":11515,"date":"2021-12-20T10:36:08","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T15:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2.worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/library-fare-streaming-platforms-drive-u-k-tv-exports\/"},"modified":"2021-12-21T09:23:35","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T14:23:35","slug":"library-fare-streaming-platforms-drive-u-k-tv-exports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tveurope\/2021\/12\/20\/library-fare-streaming-platforms-drive-u-k-tv-exports\/","title":{"rendered":"Library Fare, Streaming Platforms Drive U.K. TV Exports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While library sales and deals with streaming services increased, overall sales of British TV exports slipped by 3.3 percent to\u00a0\u00a31.4 billion ($1.9 billion) in 2020-21, according to\u00a0Pact&#8217;s <em>TV Exports<\/em> report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo post such a small reduction in exports despite the effects of the pandemic on the U.K. TV industry is further evidence of how resourceful producers have been throughout the pandemic to not only keep their businesses afloat but to continue to bring quality, entertaining content to audiences around the world,\u201d said John McVay, the CEO of Pact.<\/p>\n<p>With the pandemic having impacted the production of new content, distributors were able to tap into their libraries to drive sales\u2014a third of U.K. TV exports were on shows more than four years old, Pact notes. This is up from 22 percent the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Pact also identified streaming services as a driver of growth, accounting for 44 percent of finished program sales, up from 38 percent in the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Drama continues to lead U.K. TV exports, with\u00a0<em>I May Destroy You<\/em> and <em>It\u2019s a Sin<\/em>\u00a0among the past year&#8217;s key exports. Drama accounted for 53 percent of export revenues, a 5 percent gain. Factual accounted for 15 percent, with\u00a0<em>MasterChef<\/em>, <em>Who Wants to Be a Millionaire<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Dragon\u2019s Den<\/em> among the most popular brands worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>By territory, the U.S. remains the biggest buyer of U.K. shows, generating \u00a3574 million ($759 million) in revenues and accounting for 40 percent of British TV export income, up from 32 percent.
