Returning for its second edition, the MIPDrama Screenings welcomed some 450 buyers to the Palais on the Sunday before MIPTV to\u00a0screen 12 selected projects<\/a><\/strong>\u2014both works in progress and completed episodes\u2014from across the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Grand Jury, comprised of international showrunners and creators, gave the award in the full episodes category to Globo\u2019s\u00a0Jailers<\/em>. The Grand Jury prize for best work in progress went to Beta Film\u2019s\u00a0Babylon Berlin.<\/em><\/p>\n

There were also awards presented by a TV Critics Jury, to AB International\u2019s Missions and STUDIOCANAL\u2019s Ride Upon the Storm<\/em>. Buyers, meanwhile, awarded all3media International\u2019s Clique<\/em> and Ride Upon the Storm<\/em>. Speaking of the latter, STUDIOCANAL had the show\u2019s creator, Adam Price (Borgen<\/em>), and star Lars Mikkelsen in town for the screening on Sunday. Also on site in Cannes were the stars of Sky Vision\u2019s Riviera<\/em>, which was the World Premiere Screening on Monday, among them Julia Stiles.<\/p>\n

There was plenty of Turkish talent on the Croisette, including the stars of MISTCO\u2019s\u00a0The Last Emperor<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0of Eccho Rights\u2019\u00a0Phi<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Heart of the City<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. Turkish drama also made headlines with the co-production and co-development deal between\u00a0Kanal D and Chile\u2019s Mega<\/a><\/strong>, and the agreement between\u00a0MF Yapim and MEDYAPIM and Nippon TV<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for a local adaptation of the Japanese drama Woman\u2014My Life for My Children<\/em>.<\/p>\n

German actress Rike Schmid took part in a panel on Tuesday morning, alongside executives from ZDF Enterprises, Palomar, Rai Fiction and Maze Pictures and moderated by World Screen\u2019s Anna Carugati, about the new German-Italian co-production\u00a0Maltese<\/em>, which was also screened at MIPTV<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Continental European drama is still very hot, both across the region and increasingly in North America. STUDIOCANAL landed a deal with\u00a0Walter Presents for the French drama\u00a0Baron Noir<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to air Stateside.<\/p>\n

As buyers clamor for procedurals,\u00a0Entertainment One secured several deals for\u00a0Private Eyes<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which stars Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson, across Europe and in the U.S.<\/p>\n

The wealth of activity in British drama included ITV Studios Global Entertainment licensing three series to\u00a0Super Channel in Canada, including\u00a0Harlots<\/em><\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0two dramas to France\u2019s C8<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0Victoria<\/em>\u00a0to a wealth of platforms<\/a><\/strong>, among them YES in Israel and Mediaset in Italy. STUDIOCANAL sold Harlan Coben’s\u00a0The Five<\/em>\u00a0to free- and pay-TV platforms in Germany<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Guerrilla<\/em>, a U.S.\/U.K. co-production<\/a><\/strong>, generated a number of deals for Endemol Shine International, including HBO Nordics and BBC First in Australia.<\/p>\n

Big-name partnerships were also a key theme at MIPTV. As the market opened Monday morning, FremantleMedia announced it had taken a\u00a025-percent interest in Bend It TV<\/a><\/strong>, the scripted TV production company founded by filmmaker Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham<\/em>,\u00a0Bride and Prejudice<\/em>). On Monday evening, meanwhile,\u00a0MTG and DRG unveiled a partnership with former Sony Chairman Sir Howard Stringer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for Atrium TV. The \u201ccommissioning club\u201d is dedicated to creating premium drama for regional OTT players and telcos. (DRG is also working with MTG on the international rollout of\u00a0MTG Studios\u2019\u00a0Veni Vidi Vici<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, which was one of the MIPDrama selections.)<\/p>\n

Also last week,\u00a0ITV Studios announced its investment in Jason Blum\u2019s Blumhouse Television<\/a><\/strong>, whose new slate includes a Roger Ailes limited series for Showtime and an adaptation of the feature film\u00a0The Purge<\/em>. MIPTV also saw\u00a0IMG unveil its tie-up with Agatha Christie Productions (ACPL)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for the seven new dramas based on the acclaimed author\u2019s works being produced by Mammoth Screen for BBC One.<\/p>\n
