TV Drama\u00a0reviews the drama highlights to come out of this year\u2019s\u00a0MIPCOM.<\/em><\/p>\n

On the first two days of MIPCOM, perched outside of the Gare Maritime press hub, eager fans were loitering in the hopes of catching a selfie with or an autograph from the numerous stars who arrived on the Croisette to plug their latest offerings. And the wealth of talent on display was a clear indicator of the extent to which the drama business has become a truly global one. Jenna Coleman from the U.K.\u2019s\u00a0Victoria<\/em>, Kiefer Sutherland from the ABC hit\u00a0Designated Survivor<\/em>, Walton Goggins from HISTORY\u2019s upcoming\u00a0SIX<\/em>, Tony Goldwyn from\u00a0Scandal<\/em>, Christopher Lambert from\u00a0Mata Hari<\/em>, Turkish stars Berg\u00fczar Korel and Halit Ergen\u00e7 from\u00a0Wounded Love<\/em>, N\u00edna D\u00f6gg Filippusd\u00f3ttir from Iceland\u2019s\u00a0Fangar<\/em>\u2026the list goes on.<\/p>\n

Judging by the deals announced at the market, scripted buyers are eagerly snapping up titles from a range of territories\u2014and being more proactive about investing in their own content in order to avoid the ever-competitive acquisitions market. Of note,\u00a0AXN is working with Pinewood Television<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on six development projects.<\/p>\n

Distributors, too, are stepping up their efforts to secure early access to product. For example,\u00a0ZDF Enterprises has aligned with the Finnish drama development company Fisher King<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in a first-look deal. And\u00a0Dynamic Television announced a partnership with ndF, Nordisk Film and TV2<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to adapt the book franchise\u00a0Dan Sommerdahl<\/em>\u00a0for TV.<\/p>\n

American drama continues to sell well, even if it appears to have been nudged out of prime time on free-to-air broadcasters in many markets while thriving on on-demand and cable outlets. As the week came to a close,\u00a0Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland expanded its relationship with NBCUniversal International Distribution<\/a><\/strong>, securing the RTL stations the exclusive free-TV rights to upcoming movies and first-run rights to forthcoming series, as well as library titles.<\/p>\n

CBS Studios International was touting a slate that included the much anticipated new\u00a0Twin Peaks<\/em>, with star\u00a0Kyle MacLachlan in town to meet with buyers<\/a>.\u00a0Sony Pictures Television announced a British deal<\/a><\/strong>, with Channel 4, for its buzzy NBC series\u00a0Timeless<\/em>. A+E Networks arrived at MIPCOM with deals in place in more than\u00a050 territories for the military action drama\u00a0SIX<\/em><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

European drama has been picking up steam over the last few years.\u00a0Global Screen found success<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0last week with its\u00a0Rivals Forever\u2014The Sneaker Battle<\/em>event production, which went to broadcasters in France, Benelux, Denmark, Lithuania and Eastern Europe. STUDIOCANAL\u2019s\u00a0French-Scandi co-pro\u00a0Midnight Sun<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0racked up sales to a host of broadcasters, including ZDF in Germany and HOT in Israel.\u00a0ITV\u2019s hit\u00a0Victoria<\/em>\u00a0is rolling out in some 150 countries<\/a><\/strong>, including Germany with Sky and Poland with TVP.\u00a0Season two of Zodiak Rights\u2019\u00a0Versailles<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0secured a slew of presales. Kadokawa Corporation in Japan took the rights to\u00a0FremantleMedia International\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0The Young Pope<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for all platforms. FremantleMedia also arrived in Cannes with news that Deutschland 86<\/em>, the follow-up to Deutschland 83<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Germany in 2018.<\/p>\n

Turkish drama is still a hot commodity, particularly in Latin America. Chile\u2019s Mega has entered into a\u00a0four-series output deal with Eccho Rights<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for new projects from Turkish producer Ay Yapim.\u00a0Global Agency launched\u00a0Mother<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, from MF Yapim and MEDYAPIM and\u00a0based on a format from Nippon TV<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Latin American dramas also drew interest from broadcasters, with\u00a0Telefe scoring deals in Asia and the Middle East<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0The Return of Lucas<\/em>, and\u00a0Telemundo landing slots for its \u201csuper series\u201d<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on Netflix in Latin America, Spain and the U.S.<\/p>\n
