{"id":6163,"date":"2016-05-27T10:42:23","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T14:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/itv-hulu-commissions-eight-part-drama\/"},"modified":"2016-05-27T11:33:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:33:43","slug":"itv-hulu-commission-eight-part-drama-harlots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/itv-hulu-commission-eight-part-drama-harlots\/","title":{"rendered":"ITV &amp; Hulu Commission Eight-Part Drama Harlots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON: ITV and Hulu are going straight to series with the drama <em>Harlots<\/em>, set against the backdrop of 18th century Georgian London.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-part series stars Samantha Morton (<em>Fantastic Beasts<\/em>, <em>Rillington Place<\/em>, <em>The Last Panthers<\/em>, <em>Minority Report<\/em>), Lesley Manville (<em>Mum<\/em>, <em>River<\/em>, <em>Maleficent<\/em>) and Jessica Brown Findlay (<em>Victor Frankenstein<\/em>, <em>The Outcast<\/em>, <em>Downton Abbey<\/em>). Produced by Monumental Pictures, <em>Harlots<\/em> will air on ITV Encore in the U.K. and stream exclusively in the U.S. on Hulu as part of its originals slate.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the stories of real women, the series follows Margaret Wells (Morton) and her daughters, as she struggles to reconcile her roles as mother and brothel owner. When her business comes under attack from Lydia Quigley (Manville), a rival madam with a ruthless streak, Margaret will fight back, even if it means putting her family at risk.<\/p>\n<p><em>Harlots<\/em> is written by playwright and screenwriter Moira Buffini (<em>Jane Eyre<\/em>, <em>Tamara Drewe<\/em>) and based on an original idea by Buffini and Alison Newman. It marks the first commission for Monumental Pictures.<\/p>\n<p>ITV Studios Global Entertainment will distribute the drama internationally.<\/p>\n<p><em>Harlots<\/em> executive producer Alison Owen said: \u201cIn 1760s London there were brothels on every corner run by women who were both enterprising and tenacious. History has largely ignored them, but their stories are in turn outrageous, brutal, humorous and real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow EP Debra Hayward added: \u201cMoira and Alison\u2019s writing doesn\u2019t pull any punches when it comes to sex and violence, but it\u2019s the juxtaposition of these things and the domesticity of the \u2018houses\u2019 that makes <em>Harlots<\/em> so compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ITV&#8217;s controller of drama, Victoria Fea, said: \u201c<em>Harlots<\/em> is an exploration of family, power and brutal economics in a vibrant booming world full of colour and noise. We\u2019re delighted to be commissioning the series for ITV Encore. Moira and Alison\u2019s scripts are shocking, fascinating and compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maria Kyriacou, the president of international for ITV Studios, said:<br \/>\n\u201cWritten and produced by an award-winning creative team with an all-star cast, <em>Harlots<\/em> offers a unique perspective of life on the streets of 1760s London with fast-moving and action-packed story lines and strong lead characters.
