Playground has landed the rights to The Great When<\/em>, a new fantasy novel from Alan Moore (Watchmen<\/em>, V for Vendetta<\/em>) that was published in October by Bloomsbury.<\/p>\n

The Great When<\/em> is the first in Moore\u2019s planned five-volume Long<\/em> London<\/em> series. Set in post-World War II London, it tells the story of Dennis Knuckleyard, a young clerk at a secondhand bookshop who comes into the possession of a novel that doesn\u2019t exist. The book comes from the Great When, a nightmarish, imaginary realm that is the supernatural counterpart to London, a place beyond time and space.<\/p>\n

Knuckleyard\u2019s boss and landlord tells him that if he does not return the book, he will be literally turned inside out and killed. Knuckleyard then finds himself at the center of an explosive series of events that put his life at risk and may alter and endanger both Londons forever.<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s works have been adapted several times before, with From Hell<\/em>, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen<\/em>, V for Vendetta<\/em> and HBO\u2019s Watchmen<\/em> finding success. The latter received an Emmy for outstanding limited series.<\/p>\n

Moore commented, \u201cFor the first time in my career, I\u2019m genuinely excited and enthusiastic about a work of mine\u2014one that I own and believe could work marvelously in a different medium\u2014being adapted for the screen. In Playground, I feel that I\u2019ve connected with people who respect both me and the narrative and are receptive to such input as I can offer. And, given Playground\u2019s track record, I have little doubt that this will be anything short of spectacular.
