The BBC has commissioned What It Feels Like for a Girl<\/em>, a Y2K spin on a coming-of-age drama inspired by the memoir of the same name by writer and journalist Paris Lees.<\/p>\n

Made by Hera Pictures (Mary & George<\/em>, Temple<\/em>, Hamnet<\/em>) for BBC Three and iPlayer, the eight-part series will be adapted for television by Lees. Lead director is Chris Sweeney (The Tourist<\/em>, Back To Life<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The story follows teenager Byron whose life explodes in a rush when they escape their small working-class town to Nottingham’s kinetic underworld and discover the East Midlands’ premier podium-dancer-cum-hellraiser, the mesmerizing Lady Die. Byron is adopted into Lady Die\u2019s hilarious and chaotic family of trouble-makers: \u201cThe Fallen Divas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Filming will take place in 2024.<\/p>\n

Lees said: “I\u2019m excited, hysterical, thrown and overblown with bliss, but most of all, I\u2019m just having so much fun bringing this universe to life in a visual medium. It\u2019s a primal scream\u2014from the depths of a council estate\u2014against a world that would prefer people who don\u2019t fit the norm didn\u2019t exist. But we do, and we\u2019re not going away, we\u2019re not apologizing, and we\u2019re not shutting up. This is a deeply personal project, and I\u2019m thrilled to be working with the BBC and the team at Hera, who have been so supportive of both me and my creative vision. The fact Chris Sweeney is directing, well, I feel like I\u2019m top of the pops. I can\u2019t wait for everyone to see what we\u2019re cooking up.”<\/p>\n
