The dramatic comedy series centers on Chuck, the beloved host of a morning show who finds himself on the front page of all the newspapers and gossip magazines after a scandal involving his drug and alcohol addiction erupts. With his reputation on the line, Chuck heads to rehab\u2014though he isn\u2019t fully convinced that he has a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Cineflix Rights is taking the title out to the global market. The dramedy is co-directed and co-written by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Rivard (<em>Happily Married<\/em>), Sarianne Cormier (<em>Les Vestiges<\/em>) and Patrick Dupuis (<em>Punch Club<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have had fantastic success with\u00a0<em>Happily Married<\/em>\u00a0internationally and have been looking for our next Quebec series, so the opportunity to work with Jean-Fran\u00e7ois again was very exciting,\u201d says James Durie, head of scripted at Cineflix Rights. \u201cIt really felt like a standout piece of\u00a0TV\u2014topical yet different; local yet universal\u2014with the ability to make the viewer laugh and cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Achieving the right mix of humor and drama comes down to \u201cthe alchemy of a good dramedy,\u201d says Durie, \u201cand with the topic of addiction, we felt it was even more important in\u00a0<em>Good Morning Chuck<\/em>. Once we had read the scripts and seen the rough cuts, we knew that the production team had hit the right notes. A lot of the situations are quite comical, and it\u2019s good to laugh about them, but the depth of the characters and their personal journeys provide incredible drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having Rivard behind the project gave Cineflix Rights further confidence in the show\u2019s potential for international success. \u201cIn Quebec, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois is often compared to the Coen brothers,\u201d Durie says. \u201cHe has a unique storytelling style that works on many levels. His ability to mix comedy and drama is incredible, while the way he constructs scenes and episodes provides lots of mini-reveals for the audience to enjoy along the way. I\u2019m not sure there is another writer\/director on the planet that could have pulled off\u00a0<em>Good Morning Chuck<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of acting talent, Nicolas Pinson (<em>Les Invincibles<\/em>) stars as Chuck alongside Chantal Fontaine (<em>Happily Married<\/em>), Sylvain Marcel (<em>19-2<\/em>), Bernard Fortin (<em>Providence<\/em>), Benz Antoine\u202f(<em>The Expanse<\/em>,<em>\u00a0\u202fV-Wars<\/em>), Kevin Owens (WWE Superstar) and Marilyn Castonguay <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/newsletters.worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/img\/2023-06-05-Good_Morning_Chuck.jpg\" alt=\"***Image***\" width=\"322\" height=\"205\" \/>(<em>Happily Married<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The series was commissioned in Canada by Crave, and Cineflix Rights has its sights set on sales across the globe. \u201cAddiction is a universal topic, and the rise and fall of the celebrity is a story everyone recognizes, so I am not sure it is restricted to any territory,\u201d Durie says. \u201cWhat I love about this show is that it starts off as a story about celebrity downfall but really finds its feet in the personal stories of \u2018normal\u2019 people and their addictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The subject matter and the shooting style are unique and distinct, he adds, noting that there are some \u201cunforgettable scenes in each episode.\u201d Durie continues, \u201cVisually, it is very eye-catching, so much so that Crave commissioned a black-and-white version to go alongside the color version.
