The series premiered on ITVX in the U.K. late last year to critical acclaim and debuted earlier this month on BritBox in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. All3Media International is taking the title out to the international market.<\/p>\n<div style=\"display: block; position: relative; max-width: 690px;\">\n \t                <div style=\"padding-top: 56.2504%;\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<video data-video-id=\"6322407829112\" \n\t\t\t\t\tdata-account=\"1120308147\" \n\t\t\t\t\tdata-player=\"default\" \n\t\t\t\t\tdata-embed=\"default\" \n\t\t\t\t\tdata-application-id \n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"video-js\" \n\t\t\t\t\tcontrols=\"\"\n                    loop autoplay\n\t\t\t\t\tstyle=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0px; bottom: 0px; right: 0px; left: 0px;\"><\/div><\/video>\n\t\t\t\t\t<script src=\"\/\/players.brightcove.net\/1120308147\/default_default\/index.min.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The four-part drama was adapted by author and writer Sara Collins from her debut novel of the same name. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t my idea!,\u201d Collins says of the book-to-screen adaptation, noting that her agent had been approached by a number of producers. \u201cI really had to be persuaded. I had never been convinced before that adaptations were a good idea. I did not want to hate the adaptation of my own book; I didn\u2019t want it to be another occasion where people would say, \u2018Well the book was clearly better.\u2019 So, it was a risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The producers allowed Collins herself to adapt the novel. \u201cI fell in love with screenwriting,\u201d she says. \u201cI also fell in love with Karla-Simone [Spence] in this role [as Frannie]. Those two things came together to make it a pretty enjoyable experience in spite of my initial reluctance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spence plays the 20-year-old former slave girl Frannie Langton, who is gifted to the wealthy George Benham and soon finds herself the prime suspect of a double murder. With no recollection, she must piece together the possible events and fight to tell her story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I read the script\u2026I was in shock; I couldn\u2019t believe there was a Jamaican woman in a period drama,\u201d says Spence, whose family is also Jamaican. \u201cI immediately could see who she was.
