UKTV\u2019s free-to-air channel Drama has commissioned its first original, the six-part series Outrageous<\/em>, from Firebird Pictures.<\/p>\n

Written by Sarah Williams (Small Island<\/em>, Flesh and Blood<\/em>, The Long Song<\/em>), the series will tell the true story of the six Mitford sisters, who refused to play by the rules in the 1930s and whose scandalous lives made headlines around the world.<\/p>\n

Filled with family betrayals, public scandals, political extremism, personal heartache and imprisonment, the show will explore how and why these women were ahead of their time and what drove them to take their complex paths.<\/p>\n

The series will be produced by Firebird Pictures, which is wholly owned by BBC Studios. Executive producers are Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Matthew Mosley for Firebird and Philippa Collie Cousins for UKTV.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been intrigued by these notorious sisters for many years and am thrilled to finally be bringing their stories to the screen,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWe’ve seen many fictionalized versions of their lives before, but in this family\u2019s case, the truth really is far stranger and more astonishing than anything you could invent. These six headstrong women have often been accused of being mad, bad and dangerous to know\u2014and a couple of them were\u2014but what they all had was the absolute courage of their convictions and to hell with the consequences. And that makes for a cracking good story.\u201d<\/p>\n
