{"id":14514,"date":"2021-02-22T10:07:51","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T15:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2.worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/julia-roberts-sean-penn-star-watergate-drama-starz\/"},"modified":"2021-02-22T11:25:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T16:25:18","slug":"julia-roberts-sean-penn-to-star-in-watergate-drama-for-starz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/julia-roberts-sean-penn-to-star-in-watergate-drama-for-starz\/","title":{"rendered":"Julia Roberts, Sean Penn to Star in Watergate Drama for Starz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starz has picked up the anthology series <em>Gaslit<\/em>, starring Julia Roberts (<em>Homecoming<\/em>, <em>Wonder<\/em>) and Sean Penn (<em>Milk<\/em>, <em>Mystic River<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><em>Gaslit<\/em>\u00a0is a modern take on Watergate that focuses on the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal\u2014from Nixon\u2019s bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The story will center on Martha Mitchell, played by Roberts. A <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">big personality with an even bigger mouth, Martha is a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon\u2019s loyal Attorney General John Mitchell, played by Penn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Matt Ross (<i>Captain Fantastic<\/i>,<i> 28 Hotel Rooms<\/i>) will direct and executive produce the series, adapted from Slate\u2019s award-winning podcast <em>Slow Burn<\/em>\u2019s first season. Robbie Pickering (<em>Mr. Robot<\/em>, <em>Search Party<\/em>,\u00a0<i>Natural Selection<\/i>) will be serving as showrunner.\u00a0Along with Pickering and Ross, Sam Esmail (<em>Homecoming<\/em>, <em>Mr. Robot<\/em>), via his overall deal with UCP, and Chad Hamilton (<em>Mr. Robot<\/em>, <em>Homecoming<\/em>) serve as executive producers under their production banner Esmail Corp.\u00a0Roberts will executive produce under her banner Red Om Films along with co-executive producers Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill. Anonymous Content and Slate\u2019s Gabriel Roth and Josh Levin will also executive produce. Leon Nayfakh, who created the podcast, will consult on the project.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gaslit<\/em> is the newest title from Starz, which recently launched its #TakeTheLead initiative, the company\u2019s effort to deepen its existing commitment to narratives by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m so happy to have the opportunity to share the heartbreaking, fascinating story of Martha Mitchell with the world,\u201d said Pickering. \u201cMartha was the first and loudest voice to speak out against the bumbling criminality of a crooked presidential administration and she was one of the most complicated public martyrs of the era.
