Disney+ has given the go-ahead to a Willow<\/em> series, set years after the storyline of the 1988 George Lucas fantasy drama, with Jon M. Chu set to direct the pilot and executive produce alongside showrunners Jonathan Kasdan\u00a0and Wendy Mericle.<\/p>\n

Ron Howard, director of the original\u00a0Willow<\/em>\u00a0film, returns as executive producer on the series, which is slated to begin production next year in Wales, where much of the film was shot. Bob Dolman, writer of the original film, will serve as consulting producer. Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Willow\u00a0Ufgood.<\/p>\n

The series takes place years after the events of the original\u00a0Willow<\/em>\u00a0film, introducing new characters to the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up in the \u201980s, Willow<\/em> has had a profound effect on me,\u201d said Chu.\u00a0\u201cThe story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream-come-true. It\u2019s a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can\u2019t wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s creatively exciting to not only revisit the world and characters first conceived by George Lucas, Bob Dolman and myself but to see it take flight in such fresh, fun and cinematic ways through the imagination of Jon Kasdan and Team Willow,\u201d said Howard. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a nostalgic throw-back, it\u2019s a creative lean-forward and it\u2019s a blast to be a part of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many fans have asked me over the years if\u00a0Willow\u00a0will make a return, and now I\u2019m thrilled to tell them that he will indeed,\u201d said Davis. \u201cMany have told me they grew up with\u00a0Willow<\/em>\u00a0and that the film has influenced how they view heroism in our own world. If\u00a0Willow\u00a0Ufgood can represent the heroic potential in all of us, then he is a character I am extremely honored to reprise.\u201d<\/p>\n
