{"id":11365,"date":"2019-05-31T09:36:24","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T13:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2.worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/hulu-boards-normal-people\/"},"modified":"2019-05-31T12:01:16","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T16:01:16","slug":"hulu-boards-normal-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldscreen.com\/tvdrama\/hulu-boards-normal-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Hulu Boards Normal People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hulu is going straight to series with <em>Normal People<\/em>, adapted from Sally Rooney\u2019s best-selling novel from Element Pictures, in association with BBC Three.<\/p>\n<p><em>Normal People<\/em> tracks the relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in a small town in the west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.\u00a0The series stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (<em>War of the Worlds<\/em>, <em>Cold Feet<\/em>) as Marianne and Paul Mescal, in his first television role, as Connell.<\/p>\n<p>At school, Connell&#8217;s well-liked and popular, while Marianne&#8217;s lonely, proud and intimidating. But when Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne\u2019s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers, one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they\u2019re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world, but Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Rooney is working alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O\u2019Rowe to adapt the book as a 12-episode, half-hour drama. Lenny Abrahamson (<em>Room<\/em>, <em>The<\/em> <em>Little Stranger<\/em>, <em>Frank<\/em>) and Hettie McDonald will direct the series, with Abrahamson directing the first six and McDonald directing the final six.<\/p>\n<p>Rooney said: \u201cAs a longtime admirer of Lenny Abrahamson\u2019s work, it\u2019s a special privilege for me to be working alongside him on the adaptation of <em>Normal People<\/em>. I couldn\u2019t be happier with the cast and team we\u2019ve put together, and I\u2019m very excited to watch them bringing new life to the story on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beatrice Springborn, Hulu\u2019s VP of content development, said: \u201cFrom the moment we read <em>Normal People<\/em> we were smitten.
