Creator Cristian Conti, stars Juan Pablo Raba and Cristina Uma\u00f1a, and ZDF Enterprises\u2019 Robert Franke discuss the action-packed series <\/em>Wild District. <\/em><\/p>\n

From the creators of Narcos<\/em>, Wild District <\/em>follows the story of a man who escapes the Colombian armed conflict only to find himself facing a new, more personal war. The 10×60-minute series, which features a mix of drama and action, was conceived by Cristian Conti, co-founder of the Bogot\u00e1-based production house Dynamo and whose list of credits includes films such as 7 A\u00f1os<\/em>. The idea for the series came to Conti more than ten years ago, after sitting down with former guerrilla fighters who were going through the process of being reintroduced into society after the signing of Colombian peace agreements.<\/p>\n

\"***Image***\"\u201cThe stories I heard were so sad and terrible; it\u2019s really heavy stuff,\u201d says Conti. \u201cI thought, these people deserve to have their stories heard, but the time wasn\u2019t right back in 2006 because the situation in Colombia was just too tough.\u201d Once he saw the peace process coming together, that\u2019s when Conti felt the timing was right and the series began to take shape.<\/p>\n

ZDF Enterprises came on board very early in the process, co-developing the show with Dynamo and marking its first co-production in Latin America. Robert Franke, VP of ZDFE.drama at ZDF Enterprises, says that the company was enticed by the show\u2019s concept and by the auspices of Dynamo. \u201cWe heard the pitch and thought it was really relevant, given the fact that the peace process is a continuing thing in Colombia,\u201d recalls Franke. \u201cAt the same time, we thought it would be something that resonates very well internationally and makes for a compelling background to tell a story about somebody who has to find new meaning in the world after leading a life of violence.\u201d Wild District <\/em>was produced as a Netflix Colombian original, with ZDF Enterprises holding rights for the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

At the center of the action is Jhon Jeiver, alias “Yei Yei,” played by Juan Pablo Raba (Narcos<\/em>, 7 A\u00f1os<\/em>, Los 33<\/em>, Six<\/em>). Yei Yei was kidnapped by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) at age 13 and trained as a one-man army. A lethal guerrilla fighter, he escapes the jungle and tries to reinsert himself into society, as well as reconnect with his long-lost family. The story follows as Yei Yei struggles to understand the ways of the concrete jungle and protect his family from his past while facing a moral dilemma about which side of the law he belongs on. He links up with Prosecutor Daniela Le\u00f3n, played by Cristina Uma\u00f1a (Narcos<\/em>, Sala de Urgencias<\/em>, Todos quieren con Marilyn<\/em>), and must infiltrate a dangerous and well-connected criminal organization run by another ex-FARC.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably the most complex role I\u2019ve ever played for many reasons, one of them being what it meant for Colombia, for this history of my country,\u201d says Raba. \u201cIt was interesting that Cristian was able to develop a universal story based on something very local, not centered on the guerrilla or its ideologies. It focuses simply on one person with specific qualities, with the post-conflict in Colombia as a backdrop.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Conti, it was important to make a series that would resonate internationally, but would also accurately portray the realities of Colombia today. “I always had this idea of not doing it about the actual reinsertion process; though I wanted that to be one of the engines of it, I wanted it to be much more than that,” he says. “I really wanted to focus on Bogot\u00e1, on the capital city, and the idea of a Latin American metropolis and how it ticks and how its heart beats. I found, through the main character of Yei Yei, a way to look at it from the eyes of somebody who has never seen it before, like a child or like an alien landing in it for the first time.”<\/p>\n

Uma\u00f1a\u2014who describes her character, Daniela, as \u201ca strong woman\u201d who is motivated by truth and justice\u2014says that Conti\u2019s research about prosecutors in Colombia and their cases was vital in shaping her performance, but that she also witnesses firsthand the country\u2019s political forces at play. \u201cWe live these realities all the time,\u201d Uma\u00f1a explains. \u201cThere are many problems in Colombia, and corruption is a big part of all of them. There\u2019s inequality; a few families in the country have all the power and money, and the rest of the people are living in poor conditions. This creates resentment, fear and anger.\u201d Corruption, she adds, is something that impacts many countries around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though the backdrop is that of political conflict in Colombia, the core is a very human story,\u201d adds Franke. \u201cIt\u2019s about finding your place in life. That is certainly something that everyone can relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also believes the action in the series will be a draw with international audiences and buyers. \u201cThere aren\u2019t that many action shows around that really deliver on their promise. We find this very compelling. Action works in every market; there is always an audience for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And audiences can look forward to more action in new episodes of Wild District<\/em>, which was recently ordered for a second season. A special screening of Wild District <\/em>is being held today, April 9, at 3:45 p.m. in Auditorium K.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
