Ziyad Varol, ATV\u2019s licensing and digital manager for acquisitions, sales and platforms, talks to <\/em>TV Drama\u00a0about the hit series <\/em>Lifeline, the competitive Turkish drama landscape and the reputation the broadcaster has solidified over its 25 years in the market.<\/em><\/p>\n

The story of Nefes, a child bride who escapes from her violent husband Vedat, plays out in the hit drama series Lifeline<\/em>. The show has been a top performer for ATV in Turkey, a market where competition is increasingly high and it\u2019s not always easy for dramas or broadcasters to stand out.<\/p>\n

\"***Image***\"\u201cLifeline<\/em>\u2019s uniqueness comes from its story,\u201d says Ziyad Varol, ATV\u2019s licensing and digital manager for acquisitions, sales and platforms. \u201cEvery domestic-violence victim will find something they relate to, and Lifeline<\/em> has become a [beacon of] hope for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside of its home territory, Lifeline<\/em> has seen \u201cgreat sales success\u201d in the international market, Varol says. \u201cAt MIPTV, Lifeline<\/em> was the only Turkish drama selected for [The WIT\u2019s] Fresh TV list, and with that great mark, it has sold to more than 30 countries so far. We are expecting to add around ten more territories before MIPCOM, and with Lifeline<\/em>\u2019s international debut, we believe the number of territories it will enter will be massive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making noise in a market as competitive as Turkey is certainly no easy feat. \u201cCompared to other countries, we have so many channels in Turkey; a show needs to be very successful to stand out,\u201d Varol explains. \u201cTo accomplish this, slot and target audiences are important. Additionally, high-quality productions, \"***Image***\"local touches and true matching between characters and cast with great stories\u201d can also help a program shine.<\/p>\n

This competition has made drama producers and broadcasters in Turkey bring their A-game, which Varol says has had a positive impact on ATV. \u201cWe became the ratings leader almost every month during the last two years,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

ATV was one of the first private channels in Turkey, and its high-quality drama series have been a key pillar of building its profile. \u201cWhen Turkish series became [big] in the \u201990s, ATV aired all of the popular series,\u201d says Varol. \u201cEven today, Ivy Mansion<\/em>, An Istanbul Fairytale<\/em> and Aliye\u00a0<\/em>are still hits. Today\u2019s popular actors and actresses shined with these series.\u201d<\/p>\n

ATV\u2019s drama lineup and scheduling strategy have evolved over time. Initially, series were about 30 to 40 minutes, and the channel aired them once or twice a week. Now, shows are running about two hours, and there\u2019s a new drama series each day on prime time. (In Turkey, drama series don\u2019t run from Monday to Friday; instead, they air once a week.)<\/p>\n

Over the last 25 years, ATV\u2019s sales catalog has also improved. \u201cATV became a trademark,\u201d Varol says. \u201cATV\u2019s sister channel, A2, started broadcasting [in 2016], and our series are being watched there even today. ATV has aired high-quality productions from the beginning, it continued to broadcast premium series without sacrificing quality and now it\u2019s the leading channel in Turkey as it was in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are several factors contributing to this ratings leadership. \u201cWe have a powerful daytime slot,\u201d featuring well-known presenters such as Esra Erol and M\u00fcge Anl\u0131. \u201cWe lead in ratings with total audience on Tuesdays with Grand Family<\/em> and on Wednesdays with Lifeline<\/em>. Love and Hate<\/em> is an ongoing successful production. Orphan Flowers<\/em> was really strong on Mondays last year. All of ATV\u2019s series are long-running, and its broadcasting policy is to reflect the experiences of society. That\u2019s why ATV is being watched so widely.\u201d<\/p>\n

ATV\u2019s family-oriented approach \u201cgives the audience a true feeling of trust, and that\u2019s why we are able to gather all kinds of viewers from all around Turkey,\u201d says Varol.<\/p>\n

The ATV team is gearing up for MIPCOM at present, hoping to link up with some new buyers from Europe for its Turkish fare. \u201cWe plan to meet with buyers from the Balkans, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia,\u201d Varol tells TV Drama<\/em>. \u201cWe will promote last year\u2019s ratings record holder Lifeline<\/em> and its fresh new season. We will carry out marketing for Don\u2019t Leave Me<\/em>, Orphan Flowers<\/em> and Love and Hate<\/em>. We will be thrilled to present our new lineup for the 2018-19 season, and we hope to bring new projects to the market and to close more deals on Lifeline<\/em>, Love and Hate<\/em> and Orphan Flowers<\/em>.
